CHAPTER 3 — "The Smile Of A Thief"

Veronica stared at the envelope like it was a loaded gun.

Eleanor Brooks placed it on the table calmly.

"Inside are bank transfers, fake scholarship names, forged signatures, and one very interesting approval code."

Judge Coleman opened the file.

His face hardened.

"Veronica... your name is on every page."

The audience gasped.

Veronica forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous. She's old. She's confused. Anyone can fake documents."

Eleanor looked at her quietly.

"You're right."

Veronica froze.

Eleanor continued,

"Paper can be forged. But guilt cannot."

Then she turned toward the large screen behind the stage.

"Play the final file."

A technician hesitated, then clicked.

Suddenly, security footage appeared.

Veronica was shown entering the foundation office at midnight, unlocking a private cabinet, removing scholarship checks, and replacing them with fake student applications.

The room erupted.

Veronica stumbled backward.

"No... no, that's edited!"

But the video kept playing.

Then came audio.

Her own voice filled the hall.

"Poor kids don't need college. They need hope. Hope is cheaper."

The crowd went silent.

Eleanor's eyes filled with pain.

"Those children wrote letters to me for years, asking why their scholarships disappeared."

Veronica's perfect image collapsed in seconds.

Then Judge Coleman said the words that destroyed her completely.

"Security, detain her."

But before the guards could move...

Veronica grabbed the microphone.

"If I go down, I'm not going alone!"

May you like

And she pointed straight at the person no one expected.

Eleanor's grandson.
