CHAPTER 2 — The Badge That Changed Everything

The rain continued to pour.
Water dripped from the soldiers' helmets as silence swallowed the narrow path between the tents.
The four men stared at Emily.
She slowly reached inside her jacket.
Every instinct told them she might be grabbing a weapon.
Instead...
She pulled out a small black leather case.
No larger than a wallet.
One of the soldiers laughed again.
"What is that?"
"A family photo?"
Emily calmly opened the case.
Inside was a silver military identification badge unlike anything they had ever seen.
There were no colorful ribbons.
No decorative medals.
Only a dark insignia engraved with an eagle and a single code.
One soldier frowned.
"I've never seen that unit before."
Neither had the others.
Except...
Captain Daniel Hayes.
He had stepped out of the shadows without anyone noticing.
The moment he saw the badge...
His face changed.
His confident posture disappeared.
Without hesitation...
He stood at attention.
Then...
To everyone's disbelief...
He saluted Emily.
The four soldiers froze.
Their mouths slowly fell open.
"What...?"
"Did the Captain just salute... her?"
One of the bullies laughed nervously.
"This has to be some kind of joke."
But Daniel wasn't smiling.
His voice became cold.
"Stand at attention."
Nobody moved.
"I said..."
"STAND AT ATTENTION!"
The entire camp turned toward the shouting.
Within seconds dozens of soldiers rushed outside their tents.
Captain Hayes looked directly at the four men.
"Do you have any idea who you've been harassing?"
Silence.
Nobody answered.
Emily quietly closed the badge holder.
"I didn't come here for special treatment," she said calmly.
"I came here to finish my assignment."
One soldier finally found his voice.
"Assignment?"
"What assignment?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"I wasn't authorized to tell any of you."
He paused.
"But after tonight..."
"I don't have a choice."
The soldiers exchanged nervous looks.
Captain Hayes spoke slowly.
"Recruit Emily Carter..."
"...is not here because she failed basic training."
"She isn't here because someone wanted diversity."
"She isn't even here as an ordinary recruit."
The rain seemed to stop.
Every eye remained fixed on Emily.
Daniel continued.
"Six months ago..."
"Our northern special operations team disappeared during a classified rescue mission."
"Only one person came back alive."
Everyone stared at Emily.
"The survivor..."
"...was her."
The camp fell into absolute silence.
One bully whispered,
"That's impossible..."
Daniel nodded once.
"She carried two wounded soldiers for nearly twelve miles through enemy territory."
"She stayed behind so the others could escape."
"She fought until her ammunition was gone."
"And she refused to abandon her team."
No one spoke.
The same woman they had mocked...
Had already survived battles none of them had ever faced.
Emily lowered her eyes.
"I don't like talking about it."
Daniel looked around the camp.
"Tomorrow morning..."
"She'll be leading your survival evaluation."
Laughter no longer existed.
Only shock.
Only regret.
But none of them knew...
The worst test wasn't coming from Emily.
It was already on its way.
That very night...
An emergency alarm suddenly echoed through the forest.
Red lights flashed across the camp.
A frightened radio operator ran toward Captain Hayes.
"Sir!"
"We've lost contact with Alpha Patrol!"
"And they sent one final message..."
Daniel grabbed the radio.
"What did they say?"
The operator swallowed hard.
"They only managed three words before the signal disappeared..."
"They're hunting us..."
Emily's expression instantly changed.
For the first time...
She looked genuinely worried.
Because she recognized exactly who "they" were.
And she knew...
May you like
Most of the soldiers in this camp would never survive if they met them.
