CHAPTER 5 – THE SECRET THAT MADE AN ENTIRE PRISON STAND BESIDE HER

Victor looked around in disbelief.

Three hundred inmates.

Murderers.

Gang leaders.

Fraud artists.

Women who had spent years trying to destroy one another.

Now they stood shoulder to shoulder.

United.

For Lily.

Victor laughed.

"You expect me to believe these criminals suddenly found a conscience?"

No one answered.

Instead...

Monica stepped forward.

"You still don't understand."

Victor narrowed his eyes.

"What am I missing?"

Monica glanced at Raven.

Then at Lily.

"Tell her."

Raven hesitated.

For years, she had sworn never to reveal the truth.

But there was no reason to hide it anymore.

She slowly faced Lily.

"When I first came to Blackridge..."

"I hated everyone."

"I wanted revenge."

"I wanted the whole world to suffer."

Lily listened silently.

"But then..."

"I started seeing women arrive here who had children waiting outside."

"Some were guilty."

"Some weren't."

"But every one of them cried the same way at night."

Raven's voice broke.

"So I made myself a promise."

"If I couldn't save my own daughter..."

"I'd save everyone else's."

Lily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Monica smiled sadly.

"You really don't know."

She pointed around the yard.

"See that woman?"

A gray-haired inmate stepped forward.

"My son graduated from college because Raven secretly paid his tuition."

Another woman wiped away tears.

"My daughter needed heart surgery."

"Someone donated two hundred thousand dollars anonymously."

Another voice echoed.

"My twins were adopted by a loving family instead of entering foster care."

One after another...

The women spoke.

"My mother's mortgage was paid."

"My brother's addiction treatment."

"My little sister's wheelchair."

"My son's lawyer."

"My baby's medicine."

Lily stared at Raven.

"You did all this?"

Raven nodded.

"Every dollar came from the Hawthorne trust your father created before he died."

"I hacked into the hidden account before they arrested me."

"I couldn't spend it on revenge."

"So I spent it saving families."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"You stole my fortune."

Raven looked him straight in the eyes.

"No."

"I protected hers."

Victor's face twisted with rage.

"For twenty-two years..."

"You've been giving away what belonged to me!"

"It was never yours," Raven replied.

"It belonged to Lily."

Victor suddenly began clapping.

Slowly.

Almost proudly.

"I have to admit..."

"You've exceeded my expectations."

He reached into his pocket and removed a small black remote.

"I wondered why so many inmates refused my offers."

"They were loyal to you."

He pressed the first button.

A dozen explosions echoed outside the prison walls.

The electricity died completely.

Darkness swallowed the building.

Then emergency floodlights switched on.

Every exit gate rolled open.

Outside...

More than fifty black armored SUVs surrounded Blackridge Prison.

Dozens of armed mercenaries poured through the gates.

Automatic rifles raised.

Night-vision goggles glowing.

Monica whispered,

"That's not a rescue team..."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"It's my private army."

The inmates froze.

Even Raven knew they couldn't defeat trained soldiers.

Victor looked directly at Lily.

"Choose."

"Walk out with me..."

"And every woman here lives."

"Refuse..."

"And this prison becomes their grave."

Lily's hands trembled.

Hundreds of lives now depended on one decision.

She slowly stepped forward.

"I'll go."

"No!" Raven shouted.

But Lily smiled through her tears.

"My parents died protecting me."

"You spent twenty-two years protecting me."

"It's my turn to protect someone else."

Victor extended his hand.

"Smart girl."

Just as Lily reached for it...

A helicopter roared overhead.

Its spotlight flooded the prison yard.

A powerful voice thundered through loudspeakers:

"Victor Hale! Federal agents! Drop your weapons immediately!"

Victor didn't panic.

He smiled.

Because he recognized that voice.

"So..."

"You finally found us."

Then he whispered something that made Raven's blood run cold.

May you like

"I invited them."
