CHAPTER 1 — The Last Family Trip

For years, everyone believed Viktor Andersen had lived the American dream.

He had started with nothing.

At twenty-three, he worked eighteen-hour days repairing machinery inside an old warehouse. By forty-five, he owned Andersen Technologies, a company worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

His wife had passed away years earlier, leaving him to raise two children alone.

Michael.

Elena.

They never heard the word "no."

Private schools.

Luxury vacations.

Sports cars before graduation.

Trust funds larger than most people earned in a lifetime.

Whenever someone praised Viktor's success, he always answered the same way.

"None of it matters if my children are happy."

He believed every sacrifice had been worth it.

Then fate struck without warning.

One morning, while preparing for an important meeting, Viktor collapsed from a massive stroke.

The man who had built an empire with his own hands lost nearly all movement below his shoulders.

Doctors managed to save his life.

But walking again...

They said it was almost impossible.

After months in rehabilitation, Viktor returned home confined to a wheelchair.

His company was eventually sold.

Most of the money was placed into long-term investments.

He no longer attended board meetings.

No longer signed billion-dollar contracts.

His days became painfully quiet.

He watched sunsets from the garden.

Read books.

Listened to classical music.

And waited for his children to visit.

At first...

They came often.

Michael always hugged him.

Elena kissed his forehead.

They smiled for the nurses.

Asked about medications.

Posted cheerful family photos online.

People commented:

"You're amazing children."

"Your father is so lucky."

No one knew the truth.

The moment visitors left...

Everything changed.

Their smiles disappeared.

Their conversations became impatient.

"Do you know how much these nurses cost?" Michael muttered one afternoon.

"You've lived long enough," Elena whispered while scrolling through luxury home listings.

Viktor heard everything.

He simply stayed silent.

Not because he couldn't answer.

Because he still loved them.

Then one rainy evening...

Michael searched through his father's office looking for old investment papers.

Instead...

He discovered something far more valuable.

A life insurance policy.

Ten million dollars.

One sentence caught his eye.

Death caused by accidental circumstances. Beneficiaries: Michael Andersen and Elena Andersen.

His heartbeat quickened.

That night...

Brother and sister sat together in Michael's penthouse overlooking the city.

Neither mentioned grief.

Neither mentioned morality.

Only numbers.

Debt.

Mortgages.

Luxury cars.

Failed investments.

"This changes everything," Michael whispered.

Elena remained silent for a long time.

Finally...

She asked one question.

"Would anyone ever know?"

The room became deathly quiet.

Days later...

The discussions became plans.

Plans became rehearsals.

Rehearsals became murder.

They selected a famous coastal cliff visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Strong winds.

Dangerous paths.

Accidents happened there often.

Too often.

It was perfect.

On the morning of the trip...

Michael smiled while helping his father into the SUV.

"We thought you'd enjoy seeing the ocean again."

Viktor smiled gently.

"I've missed spending time with you both."

Those words almost broke Elena.

Almost.

The drive lasted three hours.

Dark clouds rolled over the sea.

Powerful waves crashed against black rocks hundreds of feet below.

Tourists slowly disappeared as rain approached.

Soon...

Only three people remained on the viewing platform.

Father.

Son.

Daughter.

The wind screamed through the cliffs.

Viktor suddenly noticed something.

Neither child was looking at the ocean.

They were staring...

At each other.

Then Michael slowly nodded.

Elena closed her eyes.

Viktor felt fear unlike anything he'd ever known.

"Children..."

"What are you doing?"

No answer.

The wheelchair suddenly moved.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Straight toward the edge.

"Dad..." Elena whispered through tears.

"I'm sorry."

Then...

Together...

They shoved.

The wheelchair vanished over the cliff.

Viktor disappeared into the roaring darkness below.

For several terrifying seconds...

Silence.

Then Elena screamed.

Michael dialed emergency services.

"Our father..."

"He accidentally rolled off the cliff!"

Everything appeared perfect.

Until someone standing hundreds of yards away quietly lowered a pair of military binoculars...

…and reached for a satellite phone.
