CHAPTER 1

The Cat That Refused to Let Her Owner Sleep

I have worked as a veterinarian for nearly twenty-five years.

People usually come to me expecting answers about sick pets.

But sometimes...

the animal isn't the one asking for help.

That Tuesday afternoon seemed ordinary.

The waiting room smelled faintly of disinfectant and fresh coffee when the receptionist informed me that my next patient had arrived.

"Anna Peterson."

She sounded exhausted before I even met her.

When she entered my office, she looked like someone who hadn't truly slept in months.

Dark circles surrounded her tired blue eyes.

Her gray coat hung loosely from her shoulders.

She carried an old blue pet carrier with both hands as if she were protecting something incredibly precious.

Inside sat a magnificent long-haired gray cat.

Large green eyes.

Perfect posture.

Not frightened.

Not aggressive.

Simply...watching.

"This is Luna," Anna whispered.

"My husband named her."

Her voice cracked on the word husband.

I noticed the wedding ring still resting on her finger.

"It's a beautiful name," I smiled.

Anna nodded weakly.

"It used to fit her."

She paused.

"But every night..."

"...she turns into a monster."

I waited.

"She wakes me up exactly between three and four every morning."

"At first she gently taps my face."

"If I ignore her, she slaps harder."

"Then she bites my hand."

"She claws at the blanket."

"She won't stop until I leave my bedroom."

"And the strange part?"

"As soon as I go sleep on the couch..."

"...she immediately jumps onto my pillow."

"...and sleeps peacefully until sunrise."

She looked embarrassed.

"I know how ridiculous it sounds."

"My therapist thinks I'm developing anxiety."

"My neighbors think the cat hates me."

"My sister says she's spoiled."

"But none of that makes sense."

"She's never behaved like this before."

"Never."

I crouched beside Luna.

The cat calmly rubbed her head against my hand.

No aggression.

No fear.

Her heartbeat...

perfect.

Her lungs...

clear.

Weight...

healthy.

Eyes...

bright.

She was one of the healthiest cats I had examined all month.

"When did this begin?" I asked.

Anna thought carefully.

"Three months ago."

"Almost exactly."

"What happened three months ago?"

She froze.

"My husband..."

"...passed away."

Silence filled the examination room.

"He died from a heart attack while sleeping."

"I've been living alone ever since."

I nodded respectfully.

"I'm sorry."

She forced a smile.

"So was Luna."

"She adored him."

I looked at the cat again.

Still staring.

Not at me.

At Anna.

Watching every tiny movement.

Animals don't behave randomly.

Especially cats.

Every unusual behavior has a reason.

Sometimes the reason is simple.

Sometimes...

it saves a life.

As Anna prepared to leave, Luna suddenly stiffened.

Her ears flattened.

Her pupils became enormous.

Without warning...

she leaped from the examination table...

landed on Anna's shoulder...

and began desperately pawing at the woman's neck.

Not scratching.

Not attacking.

Touching...

the exact same spot...

again...

and again...

A cold chill ran down my spine.

Because I suddenly remembered another patient...

Years earlier.

A dog had behaved exactly the same way...

And it hadn't been warning us about itself.

It had been trying to warn us...

about cancer.

Anna had absolutely no idea...

that her cat wasn't trying to steal her bed.

She was desperately trying...

May you like

to save her owner's life.
