CHAPTER 3

The Last Gift Her Husband Never Got to Give
Anna couldn't stop crying.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded the first yellowed letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her husband's.
"My beautiful Anna...
If you're reading this...
then fate has played one final trick on us."
He explained that years earlier he had been diagnosed with a heart condition.
Doctors warned him that he might not live as long as he hoped.
He secretly wrote letters for every important milestone Anna might face without him.
Birthdays.
Christmas.
Anniversaries.
Even lonely nights.
He had hidden the box inside the wall during a home renovation, intending to show her one day.
But death came sooner than expected.
No one knew the letters existed.
Except...
perhaps...
Luna.
The cat had often watched him working inside that room years earlier.
Whether she remembered the spot...
or simply refused to abandon the room where his scent remained strongest...
no one could ever know.
Anna read one letter every Sunday morning.
Instead of mourning her husband's absence...
she slowly began celebrating the life they had shared.
Her medical treatment restored her health.
The leaking furnace was replaced.
The bedroom became safe again.
Months later she invited me back for dinner.
Luna greeted me at the door.
She looked happier.
Healthier.
She no longer woke Anna at three in the morning.
She slept peacefully beside her owner every night.
Exactly where she belonged.
Before I left, Anna smiled through grateful tears.
"Everyone thought Luna had gone crazy."
She gently stroked the gray cat's soft fur.
"But she wasn't stealing my bed."
"She was giving me another chance to live."
As veterinarians, we spend our lives treating animals.
But every once in a while...
an animal reminds us...
that they have been quietly protecting us all along.
Sometimes love doesn't speak.
Sometimes...
it has whiskers...
soft paws...
and wakes you in the middle of the night...
May you like
just in time to save your life.
