CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET NO ONE KNEW
As Kate recovered in the military hospital, rumors spread across every base in the region.
Some called her the woman who survived impossible odds.
Others called her the bravest soldier they'd ever seen.
But the biggest surprise was still waiting.
Two weeks later, every member of the unit was ordered into the main briefing hall.
No one knew why.
The commander entered.
Behind him walked several senior officers...
Then an elderly four-star general.

Years earlier, while serving as academy inspector under a false identity, he had secretly observed every graduating class.
Only one cadet had risked her own career by reporting corruption involving instructors.

Was Kate.
She hadn't known the quiet old inspector she defended was actually one of the highest-ranking officers in the armed forces.
The general turned toward the three disgraced soldiers.
"You thought you were punishing a whistleblower."
He paused.
"You were attacking the very values this uniform represents."
Military police stepped forward.
Handcuffs clicked shut.
The courtroom trial that followed became one of the most widely discussed military justice cases in years.
The three soldiers were convicted for attempted murder, assault, obstruction of justice, and multiple corruption offenses uncovered during the investigation.
Every illegal sale they had ever hidden came to light.
Their careers ended in disgrace.
Months later...
Kate returned to active duty.
The scars remained.
So did the limp in her left leg.
But when a new group of recruits arrived at the base, they all noticed the same framed photograph hanging in the headquarters hallway.
It showed a young woman standing beside a helicopter.
Below it, a simple plaque read:
