CHAPTER 2 — THE LETTER THAT DESTROYED AN ENTIRE FAMILY

Reid's hands shook as he opened the envelope.

Inside...

Only one page.

No legal language.

No anger.

No insults.

Just his mother's handwriting.

The handwriting that had once signed every permission slip...

Every birthday card...

Every Christmas gift.

He began reading aloud.

"Dear Reid,

Tonight was not the first time your wife disrespected me.

It was only the first time you watched...

and chose silence."

The room became so quiet that even the kitchen staff stopped working.

"You think tonight is about a restaurant bill.

It isn't.

Tonight is about every moment you allowed someone to convince you that the woman who raised you deserved less respect than a stranger."

Tessa crossed her arms.

"This is ridiculous."

No one answered her.

Reid kept reading.

"Do you remember your first bicycle?

I skipped meals for three months to buy it.

Do you remember college?

The scholarship covered only half.

The rest came from selling my wedding jewelry."

Tears blurred the words.

His voice cracked.

Several guests quietly lowered their heads.

One elderly couple began crying.

Then came the paragraph no one expected.

"The house you proudly call yours...

is legally mine."

Every face lifted.

Tessa blinked.

"What?"

Reid turned the page over.

There was nothing else.

Only one sentence at the bottom.

"Check the county property records."

Tessa grabbed her phone.

Her confidence vanished.

Five minutes later...

Her face turned completely white.

The deed...

Listed only one owner.

Wilma Tate.

The mortgage...

Paid in full.

The taxes...

Paid by Wilma.

Everything.

Reid looked like someone had punched the air out of his lungs.

"Mom never transferred it..."

"No."

An older attorney sitting near the end of the table quietly nodded.

"Looks like she allowed you to live there."

Tessa whispered,

"...rent free?"

Nobody answered.

Then another notification arrived on Reid's phone.

ACCOUNT ACCESS REVOKED

The corporate card.

Gone.

The luxury SUV.

Leased by Wilma's company.

Disabled remotely.

Country club membership.

Cancelled.

Vacation home.

Owned by Tate Holdings.

Access removed.

Tessa finally exploded.

"This is emotional blackmail!"

But before anyone could respond...

The television above the restaurant bar interrupted dinner.

BREAKING BUSINESS NEWS.

The anchor smiled.

"Tate Freight Logistics has officially been acquired in one of the largest transportation sales in state history..."

Wilma Tate's photograph appeared across the screen.

Elegant.

Calm.

Powerful.

Every guest slowly turned toward Reid.

Not with sympathy.

With embarrassment.

Because only minutes earlier...

They had laughed...

while humiliating one of the wealthiest women in the state.

But none of them realized...

The biggest surprise wasn't the company.

Or the mansion.

Or the money.

Wilma had been hiding one final secret.

One she had protected for thirty-six years.

May you like

And tomorrow morning...

The entire city would know it.
