CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET WILMA HAD KEPT FOR FORTY YEARS

A week later, Reid received another envelope.
No return address.
Only his mother's handwriting.
Inside was a key.
An old brass key.
Attached to it...
One sentence.
"Warehouse 7. Come alone."
The abandoned freight warehouse stood exactly where Tate Freight had begun.
The roof had been repaired.
The faded company logo still hung above the entrance.
Inside...
Everything had been preserved.
The cracked wooden desk.
The rusted coffee pot.
The first clipboard Wilma had ever used.
And in the center of the room...
A dusty blue truck.
Truck Number One.
Wilma stood beside it.
Running her fingers across the hood.
"I wanted you to see where your life really started."
Reid looked around.
"I don't understand."
She opened an old filing cabinet.
Inside were hundreds of folders.
Medical bills.
School tuition receipts.
Loan agreements.
Repair invoices.
Every sacrifice she had ever made.
Then she handed him one final document.
His adoption papers.
Reid stared.
His hands began shaking.
"...Adoption?"
Wilma nodded.
"You weren't born from my body."
"You were born into my heart."
The world seemed to stop.
"When your parents died in an accident..."
"You were only six months old."
"I had no husband."
"No money."
"No certainty."
"But I chose you."
Tears rolled down Reid's face.
"I never told you because I never wanted you to feel different."
"You were always my son."
"I hoped blood would never matter."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"But respect always does."
Reid collapsed onto the old wooden chair.
Every memory suddenly looked different.
Every sacrifice became even greater.
The woman he had failed...
Had chosen him when she didn't have to.
May you like
And somehow...
That hurt even more.
