CHAPTER 3 – The Vault of Lies

The blood was still wet.
Daniel, Michael, and Emily rushed into Richard Whitmore's private vault beneath the company's headquarters. Police officers blocked the entrance while forensic investigators photographed every inch of the room.
A security guard lay unconscious against the steel wall.
The vault itself had not been emptied.
It had been searched.
Thousands of dollars in cash remained untouched.
Rare diamonds still sat inside velvet boxes.
Even priceless artwork had been ignored.
Only one thing was missing.
A single black file labeled:
"PROJECT HEIR."
Detective Laura Bennett frowned.
"Whoever broke in knew exactly what they wanted."
Michael's face turned pale.
"So... someone else knew about Dad's secret?"
Before anyone answered, Daniel noticed something strange on the floor.
A silver cufflink.
It carried the family crest.
Only members of the Whitmore family owned jewelry like that.
Emily immediately accused Michael.
"You were here before us!"
Michael exploded.
"You're insane!"
Daniel quietly picked up the cufflink.
"No..."
"This belongs to someone else."
The detective interrupted.
"We checked the security cameras."
"The footage between 1:12 and 1:27 A.M. was erased remotely."
Daniel froze.
"Only Dad and four executives had access to erase those recordings."
"But Dad is dead."
Silence swallowed the room.
Then another officer hurried downstairs carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"Detective..."
"We found this hidden inside the safe."
Inside was an old cassette tape.
On the label, written in Richard Whitmore's handwriting:
'Play only after they betray each other.'
That evening...
The siblings gathered inside the mansion library.
James Holloway carefully inserted the cassette.
Their father's familiar voice filled the room.
"If you're listening to this..."
"...you've already started destroying each other."
Nobody breathed.
"I knew you would."
Emily burst into tears.
Richard continued.
"The fortune was never your greatest inheritance."
"The truth is."
"...one of you has been lying about your identity for over thirty years."
The tape suddenly ended.
Click.
Nothing else.
Daniel looked at his siblings in horror.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
But deep inside...

Every one of them began wondering the same terrifying question.
Who doesn't really belong to this family?
