CHAPTER 1 — "The Weakest Prisoner… Or the Most Dangerous?"

The prison bus rolled through the steel gates just before sunrise.

Rain hammered against the windows as dozens of women sat in complete silence, wrists cuffed, ankles chained, each carrying a different story—and a different crime.

Some cried.

Some cursed.

One woman simply stared out the rain-covered glass.

Emily Carter.

Thirty-four years old.

Five-foot-three.

Thin.

Quiet.

With damp brown hair clinging to her face and eyes that looked far too gentle to survive even a single day inside Blackstone Women's Correctional Facility.

The correctional officer unlocked the bus door.

"Move!"

The prisoners filed out one by one.

Heavy steel gates slammed behind them with a deafening metallic crash.

For most inmates...

That sound meant freedom was gone forever.

For Emily...

It sounded strangely familiar.

Almost comforting.

Inside Intake, guards barked orders while prisoners surrendered everything they owned.

Wedding rings.

Photographs.

Letters from home.

Emily quietly placed one small silver pendant into the evidence tray.

The young officer picked it up.

"Military issue?"

Emily simply nodded.

"No personal items."

"I know."

No emotion.

No argument.

Nothing.

The officer frowned.

Most inmates screamed.

Emily thanked him politely.

That made everyone uneasy.

Minutes later, the women entered Cell Block C.

The noise hit like a wall.

Arguments.

Shouting.

Metal doors slamming.

Televisions blasting.

Someone laughing hysterically.

Someone crying behind a locked door.

Dozens of hardened inmates immediately turned toward the newcomer.

The room grew quiet.

Then came the whispers.

"That's the new girl?"

"She looks like she belongs in a library."

"I've seen tougher kindergarten teachers."

Laughter spread across the room.

Emily lowered her eyes and kept walking.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she had learned long ago...

People often revealed everything about themselves when they believed you were powerless.

Then she appeared.

Brenda Mason.

Six feet tall.

Covered in prison tattoos.

Serving life without parole after leading one of the most violent prison gangs in state history.

Even many guards avoided provoking her.

She slowly walked toward Emily while the entire block watched.

"So..."

Brenda smiled.

"They finally sent me entertainment."

Emily stopped.

Brenda leaned close enough for Emily to smell cigarette smoke and cheap prison coffee.

"What's your name?"

"Emily."

Brenda laughed.

"No."

She poked Emily's chest.

"Your old name died outside these walls."

"From now on..."

"You're Mouse."

The entire housing block exploded with laughter.

Emily didn't respond.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't even blink.

That silence irritated Brenda more than fear ever could.

"You deaf?"

"No."

"You got something to say?"

Emily finally looked into Brenda's eyes.

"My name is Emily."

The hallway fell silent.

Nobody had corrected Brenda before.

Ever.

Brenda's smile disappeared.

She shoved Emily backward with both hands.

Emily stumbled...

...but never lost her balance.

Interesting.

Brenda noticed.

Very interesting.

Most newcomers fell immediately.

Emily somehow shifted her weight at the last second.

Almost professionally.

Brenda narrowed her eyes.

Maybe luck.

Maybe not.

The guards ignored everything.

They always did.

Prison had its own rules.

And today...

Emily was expected to learn them the hard way.

Hours later, the inmates were ordered toward the communal showers.

Every veteran prisoner understood exactly what that meant.

No cameras.

Minimal supervision.

The perfect place to establish dominance.

Brenda exchanged a glance with four women from her crew.

A silent agreement.

Today's lesson would happen there.

As Emily entered the wet concrete room, someone deliberately kicked the back of her ankle.

She stumbled.

Another inmate rammed her shoulder.

Another stepped on her bare foot.

Someone laughed.

"Careful, Mouse."

"Concrete hurts."

Emily remained silent.

Water dripped from the shower pipes overhead.

Steam filled the room.

Thirty inmates slowly surrounded her.

One exit.

Blocked.

Another.

Blocked.

Brenda folded her arms.

"Nobody touches her face."

"I want her to remember today."

One inmate cracked her knuckles.

Another wrapped a towel around her fists.

A third smiled cruelly.

Emily quietly set her prison-issued soap on the floor.

Then...

She removed the thin silver hair tie from her wrist.

And tied back her soaked hair.

Several older inmates exchanged confused looks.

One elderly prisoner whispered almost inaudibly...

"Oh no..."

"What?"

"Look at her hands."

The younger inmates laughed.

"What about them?"

The old woman swallowed hard.

"They're not shaking."

For the first time...

Emily slowly raised her head.

Her exhausted eyes were suddenly gone.

In their place...

Was the cold, focused stare of someone who had survived things far worse than prison.

Brenda stepped forward.

"Hit her."

One inmate swung the first punch.

Emily finally moved.

May you like

And in less than one second...

Everything changed.
