Chapter 3 - The Web UnravelsElena’s composure fractured in less than three seconds. The iron-willed matriarch who had ruled her family with an iron fist for decades suddenly looked like a cornered animal caught in the headlights of an oncoming train.

"Where... where did you get that?" Elena stammered, her voice losing its sharp edge, replaced by a desperate, grating shrillness. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at my phone. "That's illegal! You can't record private conversations! Tomás, you absolute fool, why did you let her—"
"Mom, shut up!" Tomás finally snapped, burying his face in his hands. "Just shut up! You ruined everything! You told me to act like a monster, you gave me the script, you said no woman could ever fight back against a man who takes control!"
"Oh, he tried to fight back, Elena," I interrupted, stepping closer so she could see the cold, unyielding resolve in my eyes. "He really did. He shattered our wedding china, threw furniture around, and threatened to 'teach me my place.' Unfortunately for both of you, my father didn't spend my childhood paying for elite self-defense and tactical combat classes just so I could cower in a corner because some insecure mama's boy watched too many toxic internet tutorials."
Elena swallowed hard, trying to regain a shred of her authoritarian dignity. She straightened her emerald jacket, lifting her chin with a haughty sniff.
"You think a little recording scares me?" she sneered, finding her footing again through sheer arrogance. "Do you have any idea who my family is? Who our connections are in this city? If you release this, we will drag your reputation through the dirt. We will sue you for harassment, emotional distress, and trespassing. You'll be ruined before your marriage certificate ink is even dry!"
I let out a low, genuine laugh. It was a sound that seemed to unnerve them both more than any shouting could have.
"Suing me?" I asked, pulling a sleek leather portfolio out from behind the entryway console. "Elena, darling... do you really think I spent two years dating Tomás without doing my due diligence? You raised a man-child who boasts about his family's corporate backing on the second date. It took me less than twelve hours to pull public property records, corporate audit trails, and financial disclosures."
I flipped open the portfolio, letting the pages catch the morning light.
"Let's talk about your precious family empire, Elena. Specifically, the real estate development company your husband left you—the one currently evading municipal tax codes by funneling shell-company funds through offshore accounts registered in your name."
Elena’s eyes widened so fast I thought they might pop out of her skull. Every ounce of color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her chalk-white.
"How... how could you possibly know about that?" she whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified gasp.
"Because unlike Tomás, I don't wait for someone to hand me instructions," I replied smoothly. "I investigate. Last night, while your son was busy playing domestic tyrant, I sent a complete encrypted digital packet of your financial records, along with your lovely voice notes instructing domestic abuse, to three distinct parties:
A senior investigative journalist at the city's largest financial daily.
The head of the state prosecutor’s white-collar crime division.
And, just for safe measure, the corporate compliance board of the firm where Tomás works as a junior executive."
Tomás shot up from the couch like he had been struck by lightning. "My company?! You sent this to my company?! They have a zero-tolerance policy for domestic misconduct and legal scandals! I'll be fired by noon!"
"You're not just going to be fired, Tomás," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of an executioner's axe. "Your entire life as you know it is about to be dismantled piece by piece. But don't worry—you won't have to worry about rent, food, or bank cards anymore. Prison is very accommodating with meals."
Elena lunged forward, her hands clawing toward my phone with animalistic fury. "Give me that phone! Give it to me right now or I swear to God—"

She didn't even make it halfway. With a swift, fluid motion, I stepped inside her guard, caught her outstretched wrist, twisted it cleanly behind her back, and forced her gently down onto the floor, pinning her beside her son in a matter of seconds.
"Rule number one of entering my house, Elena," I whispered into her ear as she squirmed beneath my grip. "Never reach for something you aren't prepared to lose."
