Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage CrumblesThe silence that followed in the living room was suffocating. Elena was pinned to the hardwood floor beneath my hand, breathing heavily, her expensive emerald suit gathering dust from the shattered plates nearby. Tomás stood frozen by the sofa, staring at his mother and his wife with a look of utter, existential dread.

"Let go of me, you psychotic bitch!" Elena shrieked, thrashing uselessly against the floorboards. "You can't do this! We are elite! We are untouchable!"
"That's the funny thing about people who think they're untouchable," I said, releasing her wrist with a sharp shove and stepping back to let her scramble up. "Gravity always catches up with them in the end."
Elena scrambled to her feet, smoothing down her ruined jacket with trembling, claw-like hands. She looked at me not with anger anymore, but with a terrifying, venomous hatred.
"You think you've won?" she hissed, wiping a smudge of dust from her cheek. "You think destroying Tomás's career and threatening me with some fabricated tax nonsense is going to save you? My husband's friends control the local police precinct. Within an hour, officers will be standing at this door to arrest you for assault, extortion, and illegal wiretapping. Enjoy your little victory while it lasts, because by tonight, you'll be sleeping in a holding cell."
I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink. Instead, I walked slowly over to the coffee table, picked up my iPad, and tapped the screen twice.
A live video feed popped up, streaming directly from the lobby of the apartment building downstairs.
On the screen, two uniformed police officers were walking through the glass doors—accompanied not by local thugs, but by federal agents wearing dark windbreakers stamped with bold yellow letters: F.B.I. - FINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT.
Elena stopped mid-sentence. Her jaw dropped slack.
"Recognize the face on the left, Elena?" I asked calmly, pointing at the lead agent on the screen. "That's Special Agent Marcus Vance. He's been heading a multi-jurisdictional task force tracking your offshore shell companies for over fourteen months. All I did last night was send them the missing puzzle piece—the encrypted ledger matching your personal signature to the primary laundering account."
Tomás collapsed back onto the sofa, his knees giving out entirely. "Mom... tell me she's lying. Tell me the cops aren't really downstairs for you."
Elena didn't answer him. Her eyes were fixed on the iPad screen, watching as the elevator indicator on the lobby camera steadily ticked upward: Floor 2... Floor 3... Floor 4...
"How?" Elena whispered, her voice cracking into a pathetic whine. "How could you possibly have accessed all of that in less than twelve hours? Who are you?!"
"Let's just say my day job isn't interior design," I replied with a faint, chilling smile.
Before Elena could muster another word, a heavy, thunderous knock rattled the front door. Not the polite, expectant knocks she had given ten minutes earlier. These were heavy, rhythmic, and impossible to ignore.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door!" a booming voice echoed through the hallway.
Tomás looked at his mother in absolute horror. Elena looked at the door like it was the gates of hell opening up to swallow her whole.
I walked past them both, my heels clicking rhythmically against the floor, stepping over the remnants of the broken plates from the night before. I reached out, grabbed the handle, and pulled the door wide open.

Standing there was Special Agent Marcus Vance, flanked by two armed officers and a recording crew from the financial news network.
"Good morning," I said smoothly, stepping aside to let them in. "You're right on time. Allow me to introduce you to your primary suspects."
