Chapter 2 - The Ironclad ClauseThe flash of the silver bracelets locking around my father’s wrists was the most satisfying image I had ever witnessed.

"You can't do this!" Charles bellowed, his face turning a violent shade of purple as Officer Miller shoved him against the kitchen counter—the very counter where Courtney had stood smiling minutes before. "Do you know who I am? I own Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics! I am a pillar of this county!"
"You were a pillar of something, Mr. Baldwin," Officer Miller muttered, clicking the second cuff into place. "Right now, you're a suspect in an aggravated felony."
Courtney backed away until her spine hit the stainless steel refrigerator, her hands hovering defensively over her designer handbag. "I didn't touch her! I was just standing here! This is insane, Charles, tell them!"
"Miss," a second officer said, stepping into the kitchen and blocking her exit. "You’ll need to step outside. Hands where I can see them."
The wail of an approaching ambulance pierced the morning air, its high-pitched scream harmonizing with the flashing lights of the police cruisers. Across the lawn, Mrs. Higgins, our eighty-year-old nosy neighbor, peered out from behind her sheer white curtains, her mouth forming a perfect O of shock.
As two paramedics rushed up the porch steps with a gurney, Samantha Vance’s sleek black sedan pulled up right behind the police cars. Samantha stepped out, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase that looked like a weapon. She didn't look at Charles or Courtney. She walked straight past the flashing lights, knelt beside me on the cold concrete, and gently touched my shoulder.
"Victoria," she said, her voice warm and urgent. "Hang on. The ambulance is here."
"I told you," I whispered, wincing as a sharper contraction gripped my abdomen. "Lucas planned for this."
"He planned for everything," Samantha replied, her eyes flashing with a fierce, vindictive pride. "Your husband was paranoid about your family long before you married him, Victoria. He knew your father viewed you as a ledger entry rather than a daughter. When Lucas restructured his corporate assets last year, he didn't just protect the house. He set a trap."
"A trap?"
"The moment anyone attempts to alter the deed of this house, or any of the subsidiary accounts, without your biometric authorization and my counter-signature, the system automatically classifies it as a hostile corporate takeover," Samantha explained, helping the paramedics lift me onto the gurney. "Under Section 14 of the Baldwin-Gallagher merger agreement, any individual attempting such fraud forfeits all directorships, shares, and personal guarantees to the surviving spouse. Charles didn't just commit a crime today. He legally signed over every single share of his own shipping company directly to you."
From the doorway, being hauled out by Officer Miller, Charles stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes bulged out of his head.
"What?" Charles roared, straining against the cuffs. "What did you say?"
Samantha stood up slowly, turning to face my father with a cold, professional smile that could have frozen molten steel.
"You heard me, Charles," Samantha said clearly, her voice cutting across the front lawn. "As of two minutes ago, when your fraudulent deed was flagged by the county recorder, the default penalty clause activated. You no longer own Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics. You no longer own your waterfront home in Skaneateles. You no longer have access to a single corporate dime. Victoria owns it all. Every warehouse, every truck, every brick."
Courtney, who was being escorted out by the second officer under verbal warning, stopped and stared at Charles in sheer horror. "What? What is he talking about? Charles, tell me he's lying! Your company—our money—what happened to our money?!"
Charles looked at Courtney, then at me, his face completely devoid of color. The man who had walked into my kitchen thirty minutes ago like an absolute king was now a pauper, ruined by his own staggering greed and utter stupidity.

"You... you little bitch," Charles choked out, spitting the words toward the gurney as the paramedics wheeled me toward the open doors of the ambulance.
I didn't answer him. I just looked at him through the glass of the vehicle doors as they swung shut, feeling the fierce, unyielding spirit of the man I loved whispering in my ear.
