Chapter 1 - The Wrath of the Ghost Heiress

Mr. Harrison did not look at David. He didn't even acknowledge the three multi-billionaire venture capitalists who stood frozen like statues. Instead, the terrifying, iron-fisted General Manager of The Grand Crest Hotel dropped straight to his knees onto the cold marble floor.
His expensive tailored suit trousers crinkled against the stone, but he didn't care. With trembling hands, he picked up the solid-black, gold-crested VIP Founder’s card. Then, he looked at me, his eyes wide with an absolute, paralyzing terror.
"Chairman Vance," Mr. Harrison gasped, his voice echoing through the dead-silent, cavernous lobby. "Forgive us. Please, forgive us. Security! Call an ambulance immediately! The Chairwoman is hurt!"
David let out a sharp, ugly laugh. He stepped forward, putting a hand on Harrison’s shoulder. "Manager, you’ve got it wrong. This is just my wife, Elena. She’s a freelance accountant from a small town. She’s prone to theatrics, especially now that she’s pregnant. She must have stolen that card, or—"
"Take your hands off me," Mr. Harrison hissed, standing up so fast David stumbled back. The manager's face was white with pure, unadulterated rage. He turned to the security team that had just rushed into the lobby. "Surround this man. If he moves a single inch, break his legs."
"What?!" David yelled, his face flushing crimson. "Do you know who I am? I am David Miller! I am pitching a twenty-million-dollar expansion tonight! These are my investors! You can't treat me like this!"
The three venture capitalists David had been groveling to all night suddenly backed away from him. One of them, a tech mogul named Arthur Pendelton, looked at the black card in Harrison's hand, and then looked at me. His jaw literally dropped.
"Vance..." Pendelton whispered, his voice trembling. "The Vance Group. The international hospitality conglomerate that owns this hotel, the airlines, the shipping lines... the family that vanished from the public eye three years ago after the old patriarch passed away?"
"Yes," Mr. Harrison said, his voice deadly calm now, though he was still shaking. "This is Elena Vance. The sole heir to the Vance Empire. The woman who owns the very ground you are standing on, Mr. Miller. And you just shoved her onto the floor."
David froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. He looked down at me, his eyes darting from my face to the black card, and then to the circle of six-foot-four security guards closing in on him.
"Elena...?" David stammered, his voice losing all its arrogance, replaced by a pathetic, high-pitched whine. "No. No, that’s impossible. You drive a Honda. You clip coupons. Your grandfather was a farmer!"
I didn't answer him. A sharp, blinding pain shot through my lower back, and I gasped, clutching my seven-month pregnant belly. "My baby," I whispered, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Harrison... my baby."
Mr. Harrison’s eyes flared with a protective, terrifying fire. "The ambulance is two minutes away, Madam. I will personally ensure your safety." He turned his head slightly toward the chief of security. "Lock David Miller in the holding room downstairs. Do not let him leave. As for his 'investors'..."
The three venture capitalists raised their hands in surrender. "We have nothing to do with him," Pendelton said quickly, backing toward the exit. "The deal is dead. We don’t do business with abusive monsters."

As the paramedics rushed through the revolving glass doors, the last thing I saw before the stretcher lifted me away was David being slammed against the marble wall by four security guards, his expensive suit ripping as he screamed my name in a voice full of sudden, desperate regret.
CHAPTER 1 HOOK: David thought he married a penniless orphan he could abuse and control. He has no idea that the empire he’s been begging to invest in belongs entirely to the woman he just threw to the ground—and my revenge has only just begun.
