Chapter 3 - The Desperate Rat Tripped by His Own Trap

David didn't spend the night in jail. His wealthy, enabling mother, Beatrice Miller, had flown in on a private charter and posted his temporary bail using her life savings and the equity on her mansion. But freedom brought David no peace.

By 9:00 AM the next morning, David and Beatrice were standing outside the heavy oak doors of the Vance Group corporate headquarters. David looked terrible; his eyes were bloodshot, his suit was wrinkled, and his hands were shaking violently as he clutched a leather briefcase.

When the elevator doors opened on the penthouse floor, they were escorted not to a standard meeting room, but to the grand boardroom. I was already sitting at the head of the massive mahogany table. I was wearing a tailored maternity dress in deep emerald green, my hair perfectly styled, looking every bit the sovereign ruler of a multi-billion-dollar empire. Victoria Sterling sat to my right, a mountain of legal documents stacked neatly before her.

David took one look at me and ran forward, dropping to his knees just like Mr. Harrison had the night before.

"Elena, please!" David cried, trying to grab my hands across the table, but Victoria sharply cleared her throat, and two large security guards stepped forward, forcing David back into a chair. "Look at me, Elena! I made a mistake. A horrible, terrible mistake. I was blind! But we're a family. Think of our baby girl! She needs a father!"

"A father who throws her mother to the floor?" I asked, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "She is much safer without your DNA anywhere near her life, David."

Beatrice Miller, who had always treated me like a useless, gold-digging peasant from the countryside, finally spoke up. Her voice was trembling, but she tried to maintain her aristocratic posture. "Elena... dear. Let's be reasonable. David was wrong, yes. But men under pressure do foolish things. You cannot ruin his life over a domestic dispute. If you liquidate Miller Nexus, you destroy his future. Surely, as a Vance, you can afford to forgive a small debt of twelve million dollars."

"A small debt?" I laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "To you, it’s a life fortune. To me, it’s pocket change. But I am not liquidating his company out of pettiness, Beatrice. I am doing it out of justice."

Victoria pushed a document across the table. "Mr. Miller, the twenty-four hours are nearly up. Do you have the twelve million dollars?"

David swallowed hard. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a single sheet of paper. "I... I managed to secure a bridge loan from a private lender this morning. It’s for ten million. I just need a forty-eight-hour extension to get the remaining two million. Please, Elena. Just forty-eight hours!"

I looked at the paper. The logo at the top of the loan document belonged to Apex Capital Management.

I looked up at David, a slow, pitying smile forming on my lips. "Oh, David. You really are an idiot, aren't you?"

"What?" David blinked, confused. "What's wrong with Apex? They're a legitimate international private equity firm! They agreed to fund me because they believe in my technology!"

"They agreed to fund you," I said softly, leaning forward, "because Apex Capital Management is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Vance Group. I am the majority shareholder of Apex, David. You just took out a loan from me, to pay back a debt to me, using your own company’s remaining shares as collateral."

David’s eyes went completely blank as his brain struggled to process the sheer magnitude of the trap he had just walked into.

CHAPTER 3 HOOK: He thought he found a financial savior in his darkest hour. He has no idea that he just handed over the final keys to his kingdom directly into my hands.
