Chapter 3 - The Secret Safe and the Hidden LedgerAs the deputies moved in to secure Julian and Chloe, slapping steel cuffs onto Julian’s wrists as he thrashed and screamed about his rights, Elena walked past them straight into the master study.

“Check the wall behind the faux-wood bookshelf,” Elena instructed Lead Investigator Miller, recalling childhood memories of her father’s hidden office compartments. “Julian was never smart enough to invent a new hiding spot. He used the old man’s safe.”
Chloe shrieked from the hallway, being held back by a female deputy. “You have no right! That’s private property! You’re breaking and entering!”
“It’s a search warrant executed under a state prosecutor’s emergency directive, Chloe. Save your breath for the grand jury,” Miller retorted with a cold smile.
With a heavy thud, Investigator Miller pried open the wood-paneled wall safe. Inside sat a treasure trove of incriminating evidence that went far beyond what Elena had imagined:
Three forged power-of-attorney documents with notarized signatures that a forensic handwriting expert could instantly flag as fraudulent.
The original deed to their mother’s lake cabin, bearing a forged transfer signature dated just three weeks prior, along with bank routing slips showing $450,000 wired to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
A physical black-leather ledger book, meticulously handwritten by Julian.
Elena pulled on latex gloves and opened the ledger. The first page made her stomach turn, but her resolve hardened into diamond.
Written in Julian’s neat, arrogant handwriting were bullet points detailing their systematic psychological torture of an elderly woman:
June 12: Refused meals until she signed the brokerage transfer.
June 19: Tied to the bedposts for 6 hours after yelling at Chloe about the grocery bills. Bruises will fade by next month.
July 2: Smashed her phone. Told her Elena hates her and never calls. Works like a charm—she cried herself to sleep.
Elena carefully placed the ledger into an evidence bag, her hands remarkably steady. She walked out into the hallway where Julian was pinned against the wall, sweating profusely, his expensive silk shirt rumpled.

She leaned down close to his ear, her voice a lethal whisper. “You wrote down every single crime in a personal diary, Julian. Did you really think your law degree from a tier-four school made you smarter than the entire Attorney General’s office?”
Julian’s eyes bulged with sheer terror. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy had vanished, leaving behind only a coward staring down the abyss of a twenty-year prison sentence.
