Chapter 4 - When the Golden Goose Locks the Vault—The Financial Reckoning

The moment the revolving doors closed behind them, a profound sense of relief washed over me. It felt like shedding a hundred-pound weight I had been carrying for a decade.
I walked up to the front desk, where Diana was waiting with a fresh glass of chilled champagne and a warm, genuine smile.
"Your suite is fully ready for you, Mrs. Sterling," Diana said, handing me a sleek, single black key card. "We have also taken the liberty of moving your personal carry-on up to the penthouse. Is there anything else we can do to make your stay more comfortable?"
"Yes," I said, taking a sip of the champagne. It tasted like absolute victory. "I need to check the billing. I want to make sure my husband's card is completely removed from any incidental authorization."
Diana typed rapidly into her computer, then paused, her eyebrows knitting together. "Oh. It seems Mr. Sterling already attempted to charge a bottle of vintage champagne and a premium spa gift certificate to the room before the lockdown. The total was nearly twelve hundred dollars."
I laughed out loud. Of course he did. He hadn't even been in the room for twenty minutes before he started bleeding my accounts dry for his mother and sister.
"Declined, I assume?" I asked.
"Yes, ma'am. Since the reservation was altered, those charges were automatically routed to the secondary card he provided at the door—his personal debit card. But... it appears the transaction failed due to insufficient funds."
My smile widened. Tom’s personal account rarely had more than a few hundred dollars in it. He relied entirely on our joint credit card for his lifestyle—a card where I was the primary account holder, and he was an authorized user.
Standing there in the beautiful, sunlit lobby, I opened my banking app on my phone. With three taps, I froze the joint credit card. Then, I removed Tom as an authorized user from every single one of my accounts.
For years, I had let him convince me that sharing everything meant giving him total access to my hard-earned money while he gave me nothing but disrespect in return. I had been funding the very lifestyle they used to look down on me.
As I walked toward the VIP elevators to finally enjoy my penthouse, my phone began to vibrate violently. It was a text from Tom, followed by three straight alerts from my bank blocking attempted charges at a local gas station and a fast-food drive-thru.

I didn't reply. I blocked his number.
