Chapter 6 - The Unmasking—The Real Reason Tom Needed the "Prank"

The next morning, I woke up to a long email from Tom’s work address—the only way he could reach me now. I expected more anger, but what I found inside was the pathetic unmasking of a desperate man.

Claire, please read this, the email began. I'm sorry. Okay? I'm sorry. The prank was Mom's idea, she thought it would be funny to 'humble' you because she felt like you were showing off by booking such an expensive place. I just went along with it to keep the peace. You know how she gets.

I scoffed out loud reading it. He was already throwing his own mother under the bus to save himself.

But you need to unlock the joint account, the email continued, revealing his true desperation. It's not just about the vacation. Claire... I lost my job three weeks ago. I didn't tell you because I was embarrassed. The company laid off my entire department. I've been maxing out the credit card to cover my personal expenses and help Chloe with her rent. If you cut me off completely, I'm going to default on everything. My credit will be ruined. Please, Claire, we are a team. We can get through this, just come back to the hotel down the road and let's talk.

I sat up in my king-sized bed, the silk sheets slipping down my shoulders. I wasn't even shocked. It all made perfect sense now.

The constant accusations that I was making his family feel unwelcome, the sudden push for an expensive vacation that I had to fund, the desperate need to "humble" me in front of his mother and sister—it was all a smoke screen. Tom was drowning in his own financial inadequacy and insecurity. He wanted to drag me down so I wouldn't realize how high above him I actually was.

He didn't leave me in the lobby just for a laugh. He left me there to assert dominance, to remind me that no matter how much money I made, he could still make me feel small, discarded, and dependent on his approval.

I opened a new document on my laptop. I didn't reply to his email. Instead, I drafted a message to my personal attorney, attaching screenshots of the bank statements, his email confession of hiding his job loss, and the unauthorized charges he had attempted to make using my accounts.

Hi Sarah, I wrote. I'm currently on vacation, but I'd like to file for divorce immediately upon my return. Please prepare the papers. I want a total asset separation, and I want him served at his mother's house.
