CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WHO SHOULDN’T EXIST

The grand lobby of the Royal Crescent Hotel had never witnessed a scene quite like this.

Hundreds of wealthy guests had gathered for Victoria Hale’s annual charity gala. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. A pianist played softly near the entrance. Cameras flashed constantly as celebrities, politicians, and business leaders arrived one after another.

Victoria Hale was the star of the evening.

At forty-two years old, she was one of the most powerful women in the country. Newspapers called her “The Queen of Real Estate.” Television hosts praised her elegance and success.

Nobody knew how many secrets hid behind her perfect smile.

Then the little girl appeared.

No one noticed her enter.

She looked completely out of place among the luxury and glamour.

Her dress was old and wet from the rain.

Her shoes were falling apart.

Her dark hair hung in tangled strands around her face.

At first, guests assumed she had wandered in by mistake.

Then she grabbed Victoria’s designer bag.

Everything changed.

The shocking confrontation froze the entire lobby.

When the child pulled out the old photograph and called Victoria “Aunt Victoria,” the room seemed to stop breathing.

Victoria stared at the photograph with horror.

She recognized it immediately.

It had been taken eight years earlier.

Back when her younger sister Emily was still alive.

Back before the accident.

Back before Victoria had convinced the world that Emily died alone.

The little girl standing before her wasn't supposed to exist.

For years, Victoria had told everyone that Emily had never had children.

She had buried the truth.

Buried every record.

Buried every memory.

And now that truth was standing directly in front of her.

“Aunt Victoria,” the little girl whispered again.

Victoria's face turned pale.

The crowd began murmuring.

Questions spread rapidly.

“Who is she?”

“What does she mean?”

“Is that really her niece?”

Victoria suddenly grabbed the photograph.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

The child stepped backward.

“Yes, I do.”

Victoria’s hands shook.

The little girl reached into her pocket and slowly pulled out something else.

A silver necklace.

The moment Victoria saw it, her heart nearly stopped.

Emily’s necklace.

The necklace she had been buried with.

Or at least…

The necklace everyone believed had been buried with her.

The crowd grew silent once again.

“How did you get that?” Victoria whispered.

The child looked directly into her eyes.

“My mommy gave it to me before she died.”

Victoria felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Because Emily hadn’t died in the accident.

Emily had survived.

And if that was true...

Then the biggest lie of Victoria Hale’s life was about to collapse.
