Chapter 4 - The Maid's Diary

Maya limped through the neon-lit rain of the city’s poorest district, collapsing into the cramped apartment she shared with her adoptive mother, Martha. Martha was bedridden, hooked up to an oxygen concentrator that hummed weakly.
Seeing Maya covered in soot, blood, and tears, Martha’s frail heart broke. "Clara... oh god, Clara, what did they do to you?"
Maya froze. "You called me Clara. You never call me that. Only when you're dreaming."
Martha began to cry, pulling a heavy, rusted iron box from beneath her mattress. "Twenty years I've lived in fear. Twenty years I've hidden you in the dark. I knew this day would come when you took that waitress job at the palace. I begged you not to go."
With shaking hands, Martha opened the box and handed Maya a leather-bound diary. It belonged to Lilith Vance—Maya's biological mother.
Maya opened the pages. The elegant cursive handwriting detailed a horrifying story. Lilith had discovered that her brother’s wife, Evelyn, had been embezzling tens of millions from the family charity to cover her husband's massive underground gambling debts. When Lilith threatened to expose her to Duchess Beatrice, Evelyn threatened her life.
The last entry, dated the night of the murder, read:
“If anything happens to me, let it be known that Evelyn Vance is a monster. She has hired men from the Syndicate. I have hidden the true ledger inside the family vault, protected by a code only my daughter Clara’s birthday can unlock. I fear they are coming tonight.”
Martha grabbed Maya's hand. "The man Evelyn hired to kill you twenty years ago... he couldn't kill a child. He brought you to me, a former maid, and told me to run. I changed your name to Maya to save your life. The DNA test they took today? Evelyn has the power to fake it. You cannot trust anyone in that house, Clara. Except the Duchess."

Maya’s eyes hardened. The vulnerability was gone, replaced by a fierce, burning resolve. She wasn't just a victim anymore. She was the rightful heir to the Vance dynasty, armed with the knowledge of a twenty-year-old murder.
"I need to get into that vault," Maya said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
