Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The deafening crash of a silver tray echoing against the marble floor was the only sound that broke the suffocating silence of the Grand Ballroom. Crystal flutes of Dom Pérignon shattered, splattering the pristine white gown of Duchess Beatrice Vance. But Beatrice didn't care about the stains. She didn't care about the hundreds of high-society eyes staring at her in absolute paralysis.

Her manicured hands, adorned with rings worth millions, were wrapped tightly around the cheap fabric of a waitress’s collar. Tears carved deep lines through her heavy makeup.

"Where did you get this?" Beatrice’s voice was a ragged whisper, trembling with a volatile mix of rage and terror. She wrenched the girl closer, her eyes locked onto the platinum-and-diamond pendant resting against the girl's collarbone. It was a flawless, custom-cut blue diamond shaped like a weeping willow leaf.

The waitress, whose nametag read 'Maya,' was shaking violently. Her tray was gone, her dignity was stripped, and now the most powerful matriarch in the country was suffocating her in front of the elite. "Please, ma'am... you're hurting me," Maya gasped, her voice cracking. "I didn't steal anything!"

"I asked you a question, girl!" Beatrice roared, her aristocratic composure completely evaporating. "The necklace! Who gave it to you?!"

"My mother!" Maya sobbed, tears spilling over her flushed cheeks. "My mother gave this to me before I was kidnapped... before I was sold to the slums!"

The word kidnapped rippled through the crowd like an electric shock.

Beatrice staggered backward as if she had been struck by lightning. Her grip released, leaving Maya to collapse onto her knees amidst the shattered glass. Twenty years ago. The Vance family estate had been breached. Lilith, Beatrice’s only daughter, had been murdered in her bed, and her three-year-old granddaughter, Clara, had vanished into the night. The only thing missing from the vault was the Willow Diamond—a priceless family heirloom meant for the firstborn granddaughter.

"No..." Beatrice murmured, her face turning an ash-gray. She looked at Maya’s eyes. Really looked at them. They were a piercing, unmistakable violet-gray. The signature trait of the Vance bloodline. "Clara?"

From the front row of the crowd, a sharp gasp cut through the air. Evelyn Vance, Beatrice’s daughter-in-law and the current manager of the Vance Charity Trust, stepped forward, her face pale but her eyes flashing with a hidden, dangerous panic.

"Mother, stop this madness at once!" Evelyn ordered, rushing to Beatrice’s side and glaring at Maya with utter disgust. "This girl is a common thief! She clearly stole the heirloom from our vault or bought a cheap replica to scam us. Security! Throw this imposter out and call the police!"

Two burly security guards lunged toward Maya. But before they could touch her, Beatrice stood tall, her voice returning with the force of a thunderclap.

"Touch her, and I will have you ruined by morning," Beatrice snarled, shielding Maya with her own body. She turned her icy glare to Evelyn. "Look at her eyes, Evelyn. Look at the necklace. This is Clara."

Evelyn’s hands clenched into tight fists behind her back, a bead of sweat tracing her spine. She looked at Maya, then at the diamond pendant, and a dark, malevolent thought crossed her mind. She was supposed to be dead.
