CHAPTER 8 — "The Underground Vault"

Maria expected to hit solid concrete.

Instead...

She landed in cold water.

The impact knocked the air from her lungs.

She struggled to the surface, coughing violently.

Above her, the trapdoor slammed shut.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Only the faint glow of emergency lights illuminated a massive underground chamber.

It wasn't a sewer.

It wasn't a tunnel.

It was a hidden vault.

Rows upon rows of steel shelves stretched into the distance.

Thousands of sealed boxes.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Gold bars.

Stacks of cash.

Paintings worth millions.

Every shelf was labeled with dates spanning more than thirty years.

Maria whispered,

"What is this place?"

A familiar voice answered from the shadows.

"The insurance policy."

The Ghost slowly walked toward her.

No armed guards.

No weapons pointed at her.

Only silence.

He gestured around the enormous chamber.

"Everything hidden here belongs to the syndicate."

"Every crime."

"Every bribe."

"Every murder."

"Every secret."

Maria looked around in disbelief.

"This could destroy them."

The Ghost nodded.

"Yes."

"And it could destroy governments."

He handed her a small encrypted hard drive.

"This is why they came after you."

"Not because of who you are..."

"...but because only your fingerprint can unlock the master archive."

Maria frowned.

"My fingerprint?"

"When you were born, your mother and I created a biometric safeguard."

"If either of us betrayed the other..."

"...only our child could open the files."

Maria's mind raced.

"So... all these years..."

"I was the key."

The Ghost gave a sad smile.

"You were never supposed to know."

Suddenly—

An alarm blared throughout the vault.

Red warning lights flashed.

Daniel's voice crackled through a damaged radio.

"Maria!"

"Listen carefully!"

"They've captured the Director!"

Gunfire echoed in the background.

"We were wrong!"

"The Director isn't working for the syndicate!"

"The traitor is..."

The transmission dissolved into static.

"...Agent Collins..."

"...don't trust..."

Silence.

The Ghost's expression changed for the first time.

He looked genuinely alarmed.

"Impossible..."

At that exact moment, dozens of footsteps thundered above them.

Steel doors began unlocking one after another.

Someone had found the vault.

Then a cold, familiar voice echoed through the chamber.

"Thank you, Ghost."

"You've finally led us to the archive."

A tall man stepped through the opening, surrounded by heavily armed mercenaries.

Maria immediately recognized him.

Agent Collins.

The same federal agent who had protected her since the beginning.

He slowly raised his pistol and smiled.

"For twenty-four years..."

"...I've been waiting for this door to open."

The Ghost quietly stepped in front of Maria.

His voice was calm.

"Run."

May you like

Collins laughed.

"No one is leaving alive."
