CHAPTER 9 — "The Last Betrayal"

The vault exploded into chaos.
"RUN!"
The Ghost shoved Maria behind a row of steel shelves just as Agent Collins fired the first shot.
Bullets ricocheted off the concrete walls.
Mercenaries poured into the chamber from every entrance, their flashlights cutting through the darkness like knives.
The Ghost returned fire with remarkable precision.
Two mercenaries fell before the others even realized where he was.
But there were too many.
Daniel suddenly appeared through a side passage, bruised and bleeding, carrying an assault rifle he had taken from one of the attackers.
"Maria!"
She rushed toward him.
"Daniel!"
He grabbed her shoulders.
"Listen to me."
"The hard drive."
"It's the only thing Collins wants."
Maria clutched the encrypted drive inside her jacket.
"I know."
Another explosion shook the vault.
One of the support pillars cracked.
Chunks of concrete crashed onto the floor.
The Director burst through the smoke with a team of surviving federal agents.
"Federal Bureau!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Collins laughed.
"You still think this is about arrests?"
He pressed a button on a remote control.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Small red lights suddenly appeared throughout the vault.
The Director's face turned white.
"Everyone get down!"
Dozens of explosive charges had already been planted around the archive.
The Ghost immediately understood.
"He isn't here to steal the evidence..."
"...he's here to erase history."
Collins smiled.
"If the evidence disappears..."
"...so does every crime."
Maria stared around the chamber.
Thirty years of evidence.
Thousands of victims.
Entire families who had never received justice.
Everything would vanish forever.
"No..."
She looked at Daniel.
"There has to be another way."
Daniel glanced toward the central control console.
"There is."
"But someone has to stay behind."
Silence.
The Ghost slowly walked toward the console.
"I built this vault."
"I know how to seal it."
Maria grabbed his arm.
"No!"
He smiled gently.
"For twenty-four years, I lived as a ghost."
"I've already had more borrowed time than I deserved."
He looked at Maria with tears in his eyes.
"I missed every birthday."
"Every Christmas."
"Every moment of your life."
"I can't change the past..."
"...but I can still protect your future."
For the first time in her life...
Maria hugged her father.
"I don't want to lose you."
The Ghost kissed her forehead.
"You never truly had me."
"But now..."
"You'll always know who I was."
He handed her the silver locket.
"Keep this."
Then he turned toward Daniel.
"Take care of my daughter."
Daniel nodded silently.
"I swear."
The Ghost entered the control room and slammed the steel door shut behind him.
Maria pounded desperately on the glass.
"Dad!"
Inside, he smiled one last time.
Then activated the emergency lockdown.
Massive steel barriers slammed shut throughout the vault.
Collins screamed in rage.
"No!"
He rushed toward the control room, firing wildly.
Too late.
The Ghost pressed the final switch.
Every exit sealed.
Collins.
His mercenaries.
And the Ghost...
Were trapped together.
The countdown stopped.
The explosives had been disconnected.
But the control room had become a prison.
The Ghost looked through the reinforced glass one final time.
His lips formed four silent words.
I love you, Maria.
May you like
Then...
The emergency blast doors closed forever.
