Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Ultimatum

"Marcus, darling? What is taking so long? The real estate agent is waiting at the lighthouse," Victoria’s voice cut through the tension like a silk ribbon wrapped around a razor blade. She walked forward, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

When she reached the table, her eyes locked onto Jennifer. A smirk played at the edge of her crimson lips, but it quickly faded when her gaze dropped to Violet. Victoria wasn't stupid. She knew the history. She knew Marcus had been married to a "nobody" from the Midwest before his empire truly went global. And she could read a DNA chart just by looking at the child’s face.

"Well, well," Victoria purred, crossing her arms. "Jennifer Hayes. I thought you drowned in the obscurity you so richly deserved. And who is this little... charity case?"

"Watch your mouth, Victoria," Marcus warned, his voice dangerously low. He didn't even look at his fiancée. His eyes remained anchored to Violet.

"Marcus!" Victoria gasped, offended. "We have a press conference in Manhattan tomorrow regarding our merger. Why are you wasting time with her?"

Jennifer took a step back, pulling Violet with her. "We’re leaving."

"If you walk out that door, Jennifer, I will file for an emergency custody injunction before you reach your car," Marcus said calmly, though the muscle jumping in his jaw betrayed his cold demeanor. "I will have the Harborfield police detain you for questioning regarding parental concealment. Don't test the depth of my pockets. You know exactly what I can do."

Jennifer felt the room spin. The systemic terror she had fled four years ago was catching up to her in real-time. She remembered the endless lawyers, the non-disclosure agreements, the feeling of being an ant under a billionaire’s microscope.

"You wouldn't," she whispered.

"Try me," Marcus replied. He turned to Victoria. "Go back to the car, Victoria. The lighthouse meeting is canceled."

"Marcus! You can't be serious!"

"Go." The word was a command that left no room for negotiation. Victoria flushed crimson, gave Jennifer a look of pure venom, and stormed out of the café, the door slamming behind her.

Marcus turned back to Jennifer, his expression softening just a fraction as he looked at Violet, who was now hiding her face in her mother’s coat.

"We need to talk. Privately," Marcus said. "My car is outside. We are going to the lighthouse estate. If you refuse, my legal team will ensure you don't sleep in your own bed tonight. Choose, Jennifer."

The Second Hook: Jennifer looked down at Violet, then at Marcus. She knew she had no choice. But as she nodded in defeat, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a restricted number. She slipped it out, glancing at the screen. A text message read: Don't let him take the girl to the lighthouse. He doesn't know what's buried there.
