Chapter 3 - Shadows of Manhattan

The Wellington lighthouse estate was an imposing structure of stone and glass, perched precariously on a cliff overlooking the stormy Atlantic. The interior was half-renovated, exposed brick clashing with ultra-modern minimalist furniture.

Violet had been led into a side room by one of Marcus’s trusted, soft-spoken assistants to watch cartoons and eat her long-promised chocolate croissant. That left Marcus and Jennifer alone in the massive, high-ceilinged study.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Marcus demanded the moment the door clicked shut. He paced the floor like a caged panther. "I deserved to know I had a daughter, Jennifer!"

"You deserved nothing!" Jennifer yelled back, the tears she had held back for years finally spilling over. "Do you remember the night before I left? Do you remember the documents I found on your desk? The ones showing that your father and my family's bankruptcy weren't an accident?"

Marcus stopped pacing. His face turned an ashen gray. "Jennifer, I told you, I had nothing to do with that. That was my father's doing before he died."

"But you inherited the company built on my family's ruin!" Jennifer screamed. "You became a billionaire using the patents your father stole from my dad! When I found out, you didn't even deny it. You just told me to 'accept how the world works.' I couldn't raise a child in that sickness, Marcus. I couldn't let my daughter grow up thinking money justifies the destruction of innocent people."

Marcus closed the distance between them, grabbing her upper arms. Not roughly, but with a desperate intensity. "So you punished me? By robbing me of four years of her life? By letting her live in a damp apartment while I have billions?"

"She has peace here, Marcus! Or she did, until you showed up!"

Before Marcus could reply, his heavy oak door was pushed open. It wasn't his assistant. It was a man in a bespoke navy suit—Julian Vance, Marcus’s chief corporate rival and the CEO of Vance Global.

"Am I interrupting a family reunion?" Julian smiled, a sinister gleam in his eyes.

Marcus instantly stepped in front of Jennifer, shielding her. "Julian. How the hell did you get past my security?"

"Oh, your security works for whoever pays them more, Marcus," Julian chuckled, tapping a leather folder against his thigh. "I came to deliver some bad news in person. It seems the Harborfield lighthouse property isn't legally yours. In fact, the land belongs to a trust... a trust registered under the name of Jennifer Hayes."

The Third Hook: Jennifer’s eyes widened in shock. She had no idea she owned any land. Julian smirked, turning his gaze to Jennifer. "And that's not all. Jennifer, did Marcus ever tell you what really happened to your father the night of his 'suicide' four years ago? Because according to these newly unearthed police files... Marcus was the last person to see him alive."
