Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath the Stone

The air in the room froze. Jennifer felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. She looked at Marcus, searching his face for a denial, a furious outburst, anything. But Marcus was dead silent, his gaze locked onto Julian Vance with an intensity that could kill.

"You're lying," Jennifer whispered, her voice shaking. "Marcus was in Tokyo when my father died. He had an alibi. It was all over the news."

"An alibi bought and paid for by Wellington Industries," Julian sneered, tossing the leather folder onto the desk. It fell open, revealing black-and-white crime scene photos and a logbook from a private airfield. "Check the tail number, Jennifer. Marcus’s private jet landed in your father’s hometown three hours before the gas leak was reported. He left two hours after."

Jennifer turned to Marcus, her voice cracking into a sob. "Marcus... tell me he's making this up. Tell me you didn't."

Marcus didn't look at her. His eyes remained fixed on Julian. "Get out of my house, Julian. Before I ensure you leave in an ambulance."

"I'm leaving," Julian said smoothly, raising his hands in mock surrender. "But remember, Jennifer... the truth always comes to light. And right now, your billionaire ex is trying to buy this lighthouse because what’s buried underneath it can destroy him forever." With a chilling laugh, Julian turned and exited the study.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Jennifer walked backward until her back hit the cold glass window. "Is it true?" she whispered. "Did you kill my father?"

"No!" Marcus finally exploded, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. "I didn't kill him, Jennifer! I went to see him that night to offer him a settlement. To give him back his patents secretly so I could fix what my father did! But when I arrived... he was already gone. Someone had sabotaged the gas line. I panicked. My lawyers told me if I was spotted there, the media would crucify me and destroy the company. So I covered up my flight log."

"I don't believe you," Jennifer sobbed, shaking her head. "You're a monster. You've always been a monster."

She turned and ran out of the room, tearing down the hallway toward the room where Violet was. She grabbed her daughter’s hand, ignoring the child’s startled cries, and ran out into the pouring rain, leaving the lighthouse behind.

The Fourth Hook: As Jennifer buckled a crying Violet into the backseat of her battered sedan, she noticed a package sitting on her driver's seat. It hadn't been there when she parked. Inside was an old, rusted iron key and a handwritten note in her father's distinct handwriting: Jennifer, if you are reading this, Marcus found out. Go to the basement of Sweet Magnolia Café. The vault key opens the truth.
