Chapter 8 - THE GHOST’S LEGACY (THE SURPRISE ENDING)

Six months later.

The tropical sun shone brightly over the turquoise waters of a remote, breathtaking island in the South Pacific.

On the beach of a quiet coastal village, a small café was bustling with tourists and local villagers. Sitting at one of the wooden tables near the water, young Tina was laughing, serving fresh fruit juices to a family of travelers. She looked healthy, happy, and free. Her skin was tan, and the terror of Blackwood Penitentiary was nothing more than a fading memory.

Nearby, Martha was sitting in a comfortable rocking chair under the shade of a palm tree, reading a book, her face relaxed and peaceful. Lexi was running the island’s primary boat rental shop, shouting orders to her staff with a bright, genuine smile.

They had built a new life. A safe haven for those whom society had discarded.

Tina walked over to Martha, setting a glass of iced tea on her table. "It's hard to believe it's been six months, Martha."

"It's a miracle, child," Martha smiled, looking out at the endless ocean. "A true miracle."

"Do you think we'll ever see her again?" Tina asked softly, her eyes tinged with a slight melancholy.

Martha squeezed Tina's hand gently. "Some people aren't meant to stay in one place, Tina. She was our guardian angel, but she has a higher calling."

Suddenly, a small boy from the village ran up to Tina's table, holding a sealed manila envelope.

"Miss Tina! Miss Tina!" the boy chirped in broken English. "A man on a big black boat gave me this for you! He said it was very important!"

Tina blinked in confusion. She took the envelope, her heart beating fast.

She opened the seal. Inside was a single piece of heavy white cardstock and a sleek, titanium encrypted data key.

Tina pulled out the card. Etched onto the front in familiar, beautiful gothic handwriting was the crest of the dragon and the broken dagger: Vincere aut Mori.

Tina flipped the card over to read the message written on the back:

"Tina, Martha, and Lexi,

If you are reading this, the network of corrupt shadow facilities across North America and Europe has been completely dismantled. The survivors have all been granted full pardons and safe passage.

You are safe now. The war is over for you.

However, during my final raid on the Apex Syndicate headquarters in Geneva, I uncovered a deeper file. Blackwood was not a state prison. It was a testing ground.

And the real mastermind behind the entire global operation was never Senator Vance, nor was it Warden Sterling.

Look at the encrypted key attached to this note.

Be happy. Live your lives.

— Maya"

Tina’s hands began to tremble violently. She quickly grabbed the titanium data key and plugged it into her tablet sitting on the counter.

The screen flashed red, loading an archived intelligence file from twenty years ago.

A high-resolution photograph popped up on the screen.

It was an old black-and-white military dossier photo of a young woman standing in a military dress uniform, covered in medals.

Underneath the photo was a name:

SUBJECT NAME: MARTHA ELIZABETH VANCE. TITLE: FOUNDER AND CHIEF ARCHITECT OF THE APEX BLACK-SITE INITIATIVE (1998).

Tina’s blood ran completely cold. The breath caught in her throat.

She slowly turned her head and looked over at Martha—the sweet, gentle old woman sitting in the rocking chair right beside her.

Martha had set her book down. She was no longer smiling.

Martha slowly turned her head toward Tina. Her posture was no longer hunched or weak. Her eyes—which had seemed so soft and vulnerable for six months—were suddenly cold, sharp, and calculated.

Martha reached into her pocket, pulled out a pair of thin leather gloves, and put them on with terrifying precision.

"She always was my brightest student," Martha whispered, her voice dropping into a deep, authoritative tone that Tina had never heard before.

Martha looked at the ocean horizon, a chilling smile touching her aging lips.

"She found me."

Suddenly, from the deep waters half a mile off the coast, a massive black tactical submarine slowly broke the surface of the water, its hatch opening as elite black-ops operatives began to deploy onto high-speed zodiac boats, heading straight for the shore.

At the bow of the lead boat stood Maya Vance, tactical rifles slung across her chest, her dark hair blowing in the wind, her blue eyes locked onto the beach.

The battle of Blackwood wasn't an escape story.

It was an operative hunting down her ultimate creator.

And the real final war had just begun.
