Chapter 3 - A Golden Cage in River North — The Night Clara Realized Who Was Truly In Her Bed

Brandon was left alive, but ruined. By sunrise, every asset he possessed had been seized by Moretti’s hackers, his career at Vanguard Capital was permanently destroyed via an anonymous tip to the SEC regarding his fraud, and he was dumped outside a free clinic with two broken ribs and a lifetime of fear.

But for Clara, the drama was only beginning.

She was no longer drowning in debt, but she was now profoundly entangled with the most dangerous man in Chicago. She couldn't simply go back to her quiet life.

Two days after the warehouse incident, a sleek black town car arrived outside her apartment. The driver handed her a beautifully wrapped box. Inside was a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald silk dress and a note written in elegant calligraphy: Dinner at eight. Don't be late, Clara.

The car took her to a private estate in the historic Gold Coast district. The mansion was surrounded by high stone walls and armed security guards who melted into the shadows as she passed. This was Vincent’s personal sanctuary.

Dinner was served in a grand dining room lit entirely by candlelight. Vincent sat at the head of the table, looking impossibly handsome in an open-collared black shirt.

"You look exquisite," Vincent said, rising to pull out her chair.

"Why are you doing all this, Vincent?" Clara asked bluntly, refusing to touch her wine until she had answers. "The million dollars. My debt. Brandon. You don't know me. Mafia bosses don't do charity work."

Vincent poured himself a glass of dark red wine. "You think this is charity, Clara? I am a businessman. I invest in assets that have invaluable worth. When I saw you at the bar, I didn't see a victim. I saw a brilliant financial mind who had been suppressed by fools. I saw a woman of unmatched loyalty who had been betrayed."

He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers with intoxicating intensity. "I want you to audit my empire."

Clara’s breath hitched. "Audit the Moretti organization? Are you insane? That’s illegal, dangerous, and—"

"And it pays better than Harrington & Lowe," Vincent interrupted with a dark smirk. "My legitimate businesses—the shipping lines, the real estate, the restaurants—need a master accountant who cannot be bought by the feds. I want you by my side, Clara. Financially, and... personally."

The air in the room grew thick with sudden, undeniable tension. Clara looked at him—this dangerous, beautiful monster who had torn her universe apart and rebuilt it in forty-eight hours. She realized with a jolt of panic that she didn't want to run away. She wanted to step closer to the fire.

That night, she didn't return to her apartment. Vincent led her up the grand staircase to a master suite that overlooked Lake Michigan. When his hands found her waist, they weren't cruel like Brandon’s. They were worshipful, heavy, and possessive.

But as Vincent slept beside her in the early hours of the morning, Clara slipped out of bed to find a glass of water. Walking past his private study, she saw the door ajar. Driven by her natural auditor’s curiosity, she stepped inside and glanced at the mahogany desk.

There, lying open, was a manila folder with her name on it: CLARA JENKINS.

She opened it, expecting to see the background check Leo had ordered at the bar. Instead, her blood ran cold. The documents inside were dated three years ago. There were photos of her leaving her college graduation, photos of her walking into Harrington & Lowe, and a detailed log of her daily routine.

Vincent hadn't discovered her by accident at the bar. He had been watching her for years.
