Chapter 5 - Blood on the Ledger — The Midnight Standoff That Changed Chicago Forever

"Boss! We’ve got a breach!" Leo’s voice roared through the intercom on the desk. "Perimeter fence is down! It’s Vance’s men! They brought heavy tactical gear!"
Vincent didn't panic. His eyes remained locked on Clara. He reached under the desk and pulled out a sleek, silver semi-automatic pistol, racking the slide with a terrifyingly clean click. He pressed it into her hands.
"Do you know how to use this?" he asked.
"No!" Clara panicked, holding the heavy metal weapon like it was a venomous snake.
"Point, pull the trigger, hold on tight. Stay in this room. Lock the door. If anyone opens it who isn't me or Leo, you shoot until it stops making noise," Vincent commanded. He kissed her fiercely—a hard, desperate clash of lips that tasted of adrenaline and fire—and then vanished out the door, locking it from the outside.
Outside the study, the mansion descended into a war zone. The muffled thunder of automatic gunfire echoed through the heavy walls. Shadows danced across the frosted glass of the study door as explosions shook the foundation of the house.
Clara stood in the center of the room, her hands shaking as she held the gun. She could hear screaming, the shattering of priceless glass, and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor.
Suddenly, the gunfire stopped. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the mansion.
Clara held her breath, her eyes glued to the doorknob.
Click.
The lock turned. The door swung open slowly.
It wasn't Vincent.
Marcus Vance, the senior partner of Harrington & Lowe, stepped into the room. He wore a pristine bespoke suit, completely unbothered by the carnage outside. Behind him stood two massive mercenaries carrying assault rifles.
"Hello, Clara," Vance smiled, a cold, corporate expression that made her skin crawl. "I believe you have something that belongs to me. Or rather, something your father stole from my family."
"Where is Vincent?" Clara demanded, raising the gun with trembling arms.
Vance laughed softly. "Mr. Moretti is currently pinned down in the courtyard, bleeding out from a rather nasty chest wound. He’s a romantic, you see. He tried to shield his men. A fatal flaw in our line of work."
Clara’s heart shattered. Vincent... bleeding? The thought of the fierce, unyielding man lying helpless turned something primal over inside her. The fear vanished, replaced by a white-hot, blinding rage.
"You’re going to come with me, Clara," Vance said, stepping forward. "You’re going to open your father’s vault, and then I might let you live long enough to bury your little mafia boyfriend."
"No," Clara said.
Vance blinked. "Excuse me?"
"I said no," Clara repeated, her grip on the gun tightening. Her mind, trained to see patterns and calculations under extreme stress, suddenly locked onto the reflection in the dark window behind Vance.
Vincent wasn't dead.
He was standing in the shadows of the hallway right behind Vance's mercenaries, a combat knife in his hand, his chest covered in blood but his eyes burning with the fury of a demon. He caught Clara's eye in the reflection and gave a microscopic nod.
"You think you can shoot me, little girl?" Vance sneered, taking another step. "You don't have the guts."
May you like
"I don't need to shoot you," Clara whispered, aiming the gun not at Vance, but at the heavy crystal chandelier hanging directly over the mercenaries.
She pulled the trigger.
