Chapter 5 - The Flame Returns to the Hearth

🚨 INFERNO AT THE MANOR: "Burn It All To The Ground!" The Sterling Estate Goes Up In Flames AGAIN!The air inside the subterranean vault was cold and smelled of ozone. Row after row of black server racks hummed softly in the dimly lit room.
Julian typed his private access code into the terminal. The screen flashed bright blue, illuminating the dark vault. Elena stood close beside him, staring at the lines of data scrolling down the monitor.
Victoria’s words proved horrifyingly true.
Every single transaction that had built Sterling Enterprises over the past two decades—every acquisition, every real estate deal, every slush fund—was co-signed by an encrypted account originating from an offshore syndicate named Phoenix Holdings. And the beneficial owner of Phoenix Holdings, registered with a verified biometric signature, was Richard Sterling.
His father was alive. He had built a shadowy global empire while letting his children believe they were broken remnants of a tragedy.
"He used us," Julian whispered, staring at his father's live signature on the monitor screen. "Victoria was just his manager. He was the architect."
"He let me starve," Elena whimpered, her hands trembling violently as she touched the glowing screen. "He let me live in fear for twenty years..."
Suddenly, a loud CLANG echoed through the vault corridor.
The heavy steel fire doors of the subterranean vault slammed shut with a deafening metallic thud. The automated security system beeped sharply, and red warning lights began flashing rapidly overhead.
“Warning: Thermal Containment Protocol Initiated,” an automated mechanical voice announced over the intercom. “Ventilation closed. Halon gas deployment in 60 seconds.”
Through the thick bulletproof glass of the vault door, Victoria appeared. In her hand, she held a flare gun and a remote security override device.
"You fools," Victoria’s voice echoed through the external speaker system, cold and entirely stripped of humanity. "Did you really think I would let you leave this basement with that ledger? Richard paid me well to keep this empire running, but both of you have become far too dangerous to business."
"Victoria! Open this damn door!" Julian slammed his fists against the reinforced glass, but the heavy door didn't even vibrate.

"Twenty years ago, a fire was supposed to clean the slate," Victoria said through the speaker, her face illuminated by the eerie red emergency lights. "History has a beautiful way of repeating itself, Julian. A tragic vault accident... a rogue gas leak... the tragic end of the Sterling heirs. I will mourn you publicly, of course. The press loves a grieving mother."
She pulled the trigger of the flare gun, firing it directly into the open chemical storage rack outside the vault door. Instantly, violent orange flames erupted, engulfing the outer corridor!
