Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW ALLIANCE

The downfall of Voss Enterprises was swift and merciless. By Wednesday, the company had declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Their penthouses were seized, their luxury vehicles impounded, and Richard Voss was facing federal indictment for tax evasion and corporate fraud.
Selena went from being the queen of high society to an absolute outcast. She couldn't walk down the street without people recognizing her face and shouting insults. Restaurants refused to seat her. Her so-called friends blocked her number.
Driven by an consuming, toxic hatred, Selena sought out the one person in the city who hated Leonard Harrington more than she did: Julian Sterling.
Julian was Leonard Harrington’s forty-year-old nephew—a sharp, ruthless corporate raider who had spent the last decade trying to wrestle control of Harrington Global away from his uncle. When Leonard had brought Aria into the light as his sole heir, Julian’s dreams of inheriting the multi-billion-dollar empire were shattered overnight.
In a dimly lit private room inside an exclusive, underground lounge, Selena sat across from Julian.
"You look miserable, Selena," Julian said smoothly, swirling a glass of neat scotch. "From fashion icon to national disgrace in under seventy-two hours. A impressive record, even for you."
"Shut up, Julian!" Selena hissed, leaning across the table. "I know you want Aria dead as much as I do. She’s standing between you and your uncle's entire fortune."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Watch your tongue. I am a legitimate businessman. I don't kill people."
"No, but you make them disappear from the board," Selena sneered. "Listen to me. I know Aria’s weak spot. During her six months playing 'intern,' she made visits to an old, non-profit orphanage on the East Side of the city—St. Jude's. She still goes there every Friday night without security guards so she doesn't draw attention."
Julian paused, his interest piqued. "An orphanage? How sweet. The ice princess has a heart."
"If we snatch her there," Selena whispered, her eyes burning with madness, "we can force old man Leonard to sign over the voting shares of Harrington Global in exchange for her safety. Once you have the shares, you take the company. You get the billions, and I get Aria. I want to personally break her, Julian. I want her to beg me for mercy the way my father begged her grandfather."
Julian stared at Selena for a long moment, calculating the risks and rewards. The prize was staggering: control over a fifty-billion-dollar global conglomerate.
"My uncle's security is tight," Julian noted softly. "If this fails, we go to prison for life."
"It won't fail," Selena promised, her voice dripping with venom. "Because she thinks she’s already won. She’s arrogant. She thinks the Harrington name makes her invincible."
Julian put down his glass. A slow, sinister smile spread across his face. "Friday night, then. I'll supply the heavy men. You supply the bait."
Unbeknownst to both of them, two blocks away in a high-tech surveillance van, an audio feed was recording every single word spoken in that private room.
Inside the van, Aria sat with a pair of sleek black headphones resting over her ears. Beside her, her chief of security, a former elite special forces commander named Marcus, looked at her with concern.
"Miss Harrington, they are planning a high-level kidnapping," Marcus said gravely. "We have enough evidence right now to have the police arrest Julian Sterling and Miss Voss for conspiracy."

Aria pulled off her headphones, a faint, razor-sharp smile gracing her lips.
"No, Marcus," Aria said quietly. "If we arrest them now, Julian’s high-priced lawyers will post bail in twenty-four hours and call it a misunderstanding. We need them to execute the plan. We need them to walk straight into the trap."
