Chapter 2 - The Weight of a Broken PromiseThe silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute that the crackle of the fireplace sounded like gunfire. Twenty-eight high-society elites stared at the trembling four-year-old girl in faded elephant pajamas. Lily buried her face against Evelyn’s knee, her small shoulders shaking with quiet sobs.

Celeste stepped forward, her diamond earrings catching the cold glare of the crystal chandeliers. Her expression was a mask of calculated disgust.

“Mason, look at this! Not only is our property crawling with unauthorized children, but this thief is using her own daughter as a distraction!” Celeste’s voice dripped with poisonous venom, designed to sway the opinion of the room’s wealthy investors and socialites. “Who knows what else that child has smuggled out of the guest rooms tonight?”

Mason’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek. He towered over Celeste, his eyes narrowing into cold daggers. “Enough, Celeste. Not another word about a child, or you will find yourself escorted off these grounds permanently—invitation or no invitation.”

Celeste gasped, her face flushing crimson. “You’re protecting them over me? After everything my family’s investments did for your firm?”

“My firm doesn’t need charity, and neither do I,” Mason replied, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. He turned his attention down to Evelyn, softening his tone just enough for only her to hear. “Evelyn, take Lily back to the quarters. You’re done for the night. I’ll handle security.”

Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, blinking back hot tears of humiliation. She scooped Lily into her arms, the little girl’s soft breath warm against her collarbone. As she turned to leave, a heavy, metallic clatter echoed across the marble floor.

Lily’s stuffed plush elephant had slipped from her small hand. And as it hit the ground, something heavy slid out of its unstitched seam, rolling across the reflective surface until it came to a dead stop right at Celeste’s satin-clad feet.

It was a platinum key encrusted with rare pink diamonds—the master key to the estate's private safe.
