Chapter 2 - THE VIP SUITE BETRAYAL

The elevator ride up to the penthouse suite of the Grand Regency Hotel was spent in suffocating silence. Evelyn stared at her reflection in the mirrored walls. Her pale blue dress was ruined—stained dark brown at the hem from spilled champagne and floor filth—but for the first time in her life, her spine was straight.

Alessandro stood beside her, his silence heavy and calculated. He wasn't just a savior; he was a shark who had spotted blood in the water.

"Why are you helping me, Lord Valdieri?" Evelyn asked as the digital floor indicator clicked upward. "You don't know me. To you, I'm just a messy family liability."

Alessandro adjusted his cuff links without looking at her. "I don't help people, Evelyn. I invest in assets. And a woman who can manipulate three years of off-balance-sheet ledger accounts while being hidden in a pantry is not a liability. You are the single most dangerous asset in this building."

The elevator dinged. The doors slid open to reveal the opulent VIP suite—a sprawling expanse of polished marble, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline, and velvet furnishings.

"Go wash up," Alessandro instructed, pointing toward the master bathroom. "There are fresh clothes in the closet provided by the hotel concierge. We have exactly twenty minutes before your father realizes his legal team cannot stop the public fallout."

Evelyn didn't argue. She walked into the luxurious bathroom, peeled off the ruined designer dress, and threw it directly into the trash bin. She scrubbed her face clean of the pale, meek makeup her mother had demanded she wear. Looking in the mirror, she barely recognized the fire glowing behind her own green eyes.

When she stepped out ten minutes later wearing a sharp, tailored black silk jumpsuit from the suite's closet, Alessandro was standing by the glass window, a glass of amber scotch in one hand and a phone in the other.

"The press has already picked up on the story," Alessandro said without turning around. "A staff member in the kitchen took a video of your little speech. It's already gone viral on social media. '#HartwellCinderella' is trending nationwide."

Evelyn felt a knot form in her stomach. "I didn't want a circus. I just wanted out."

"In my world, a circus is a distraction," Alessandro said, turning to face her. "And a distraction is an opportunity. Your sister Sloane just released a statement claiming you are suffering from a mental breakdown due to substance abuse."

Evelyn’s hands clenched into tight fists. "She's lying! I've never touched a drug in my life!"

"I know," Alessandro replied smoothly. "Which is why we are going to strike back before she can finish her press conference downstairs. But to do that, Evelyn, I need you to give me something real. Give me the key to your father's vault."

Evelyn hesitated. She stepped closer to Alessandro, her eyes narrowing. "You knew about the double ledgers before tonight, didn't you? You didn't come to this gala to sign a merger. You came to catch my father in fraud."

Alessandro’s lips curved into a dark, appreciative smirk. "Smart girl. Yes. My intelligence team tracked a twenty-million-dollar discrepancy in the Hartwell offshore accounts. But I needed proof that Leonard was actively laundering the money through his foundation, rather than it just being incompetent bookkeeping."

"And my signature on the docs gives you that proof," Evelyn realized, her heart cold. "You used me."

"I am offering you a trade," Alessandro corrected, his tone dropping an octave, becoming dangerously intimate. "You give me the master decryption key to the Hartwell server—which I know you have—and I will ensure your family loses everything while you walk away with fifty percent of their liquidated assets. You become the sole owner of the Hartwell IP."

Before Evelyn could answer, the electronic lock on the penthouse door beeped loudly.

The door swung open violently. Standing on the threshold wasn't Leonard, nor was it Meredith.

It was Sloane Hartwell.

Evelyn’s younger sister stood there, breathing heavily, clad in a fifty-thousand-dollar crimson silk gown that looked like a drop of fresh blood against the white hallway. Behind her stood two hulking security guards wearing non-descript black suits.

"Get away from him, Evelyn," Sloane spat, her eyes burning with pure venom. She gestured sharply to the guards. "Take her. Father signed the emergency medical hold papers ten minutes ago. You're going to a private facility in upstate New York tonight, sister dearest."

Evelyn took a step back, but Alessandro immediately stepped in front of her, his imposing frame blocking the security team completely.

"You are trespassing in my private suite, Miss Hartwell," Alessandro said softly, though the air in the room instantly turned sub-zero. "And your father's authority ended the moment he attempted to commit securities fraud."

"She belongs to us!" Sloane screamed, losing her polished socialite demeanor entirely. "She is a nobody! She's a ghost! She signed the papers, which means she goes down with the company! Guards, grab her!"

The two guards lunged forward.
