Chapter 8 - THE FINAL REVELATION

"He’s dead!" Evelyn screamed, her composure completely shattering as she grabbed Alessandro's lapels. "I saw the police report! I saw the burning car! My father paid off the investigators because—"
"Because your father wasn't protecting Sloane," Alessandro finished the sentence, the shocking truth dawning on him like a tidal wave. "Your father was protecting Julian."
Evelyn staggered back, her mind spinning out of control as ten years of lies violently unraveled in her head.
"Julian didn't die," Evelyn breathed, the horror settling into her bones. "The video... the video showing Sloane driving... it was staged."
Alessandro opened the attached intelligence file on his laptop, his fingers flying across the keys as he analyzed the raw data sent by his team.
"It wasn't staged, Evelyn," Alessandro said, his voice deadly calm. "Sloane did crash the car. But Julian didn't die in the passenger seat. He pulled himself out of the wreckage before the fire started. And instead of saving his sister, or returning home... he took the twenty million Euros he had systematically stolen from my sister Beatrice's estate and used the crash to fake his own death."
Evelyn covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure horror stinging her eyes. "Julian... Julian stole Beatrice's money?"
"Julian was the mastermind," Alessandro said, his dark eyes burning with an infernal rage. "Your father and mother didn't hide Julian's 'crime' to protect Sloane. Sloane was the pawn! They used Sloane’s erratic behavior to create a believable cover story so Julian could vanish with forty million dollars of Valdieri and Hartwell capital combined!"
"And my parents... they knew?" Evelyn asked, her voice cracking. "They let Sloane think she killed her own brother for ten years?! They let her live with that guilt, turning her into a monster?!"
"Yes," Alessandro growled. "They kept Sloane unstable and dependent on them using her guilt. And they kept you in the kitchen because you were the only one smart enough to spot the missing forty million in the ledgers if you were ever allowed near the main accounts!"
Suddenly, the library doors flew open.
Alessandro’s chief of security rushed into the room, his hand resting on his sidearm, his face flushed with panic.
"Lord Valdieri! We have an perimeter breach at the front gate!" the security chief shouted. "A single vehicle passed through the main security barrier—"
Before the chief could finish his sentence, the heavy wooden double doors leading to the main courtyard swung open with a deafening thud.
Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the flashing security lights outside, was the man from the photograph.
Julian Hartwell walked into the library, a relaxed, charming smile resting on his face—the exact same golden-boy smile that had captivated everyone ten years ago. In his hand, he casually held a sleek, black silenced pistol.
"Hello, little sister," Julian said, his voice smooth as silk, completely devoid of remorse. "I must say, you've done a marvelous job redecorating the family finances. But I believe you're holding onto some property that belongs to me."
Alessandro instantly stepped in front of Evelyn, drawing his own weapon, pointing it directly at Julian’s forehead. "You're a dead man, Hartwell."
"Technically, I've been dead for a decade, Alessandro," Julian laughed, stepping further into the room, completely unbothered by the gun pointed at his face. "And I must thank you, truly. You did what I couldn't do from the shadows. You destroyed our foolish parents, locked up my psychotic little sister, and gathered all the Hartwell assets into one neat, beautiful company."
Julian raised his gun, pointing it directly at Alessandro's heart.
"And now, my dear brother-in-law," Julian sneered, his eyes turning stone cold. "I'm here to take my seat at the head of the table. Or should I say... take my wife back?"
Evelyn froze behind Alessandro. "What did you just say?"
Julian’s smile widened into something terrifyingly sinister. He reached into his coat pocket and tossed a yellowed, folded document onto the desk beside the wine glass.
"Check the public records of San Marino from twelve years ago, sister," Julian whispered, his voice dripping with venomous triumph. "Before I 'died', Father set up a proxy marriage between you and my corporate holding shell to protect the family trust. Under international maritime law... your marriage to Alessandro Valdieri is legally invalid. You are still legally bound to my estate."
Julian stepped closer, the gun unwavering.
"Which means," Julian declared, his eyes flashing with absolute madness, "everything Alessandro built... everything you salvaged... automatically reverts to me the moment he dies."
Outside, the storm broke, lightning illuminating the room in a stark, blinding flash of white light as Julian's finger began to tighten around the trigger.
