Chapter 6 - THE MONACO CONFRONTATION

The French Riviera was bathed in the warm, golden light of the morning sun, but inside the private terminal at Côte d'Azur Airport, the air was ice-cold.

Evelyn stepped off the private jet dressed in a sharp, ivory-white pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. She looked every bit the powerful heiress she had been denied becoming for thirty years. Beside her, Alessandro looked immaculate in a navy blue bespoke suit, two armored Black SUVs waiting for them on the tarmac.

"Sloane landed two hours ago," Alessandro said, checking his encrypted tablet as they slid into the back seat of the lead SUV. "She’s currently at the Villa De la Rose in Cap Ferrat. My team monitored her communications. She’s meeting with a black-market asset broker to liquidate ten million dollars worth of stolen Hartwell family art pieces."

"She’s trying to secure enough cash to buy a non-extradition passport from a South American diplomat," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with disdain. "That was always Mother’s backup plan. If everything fell apart, run to South America with the art."

"Not this time," Alessandro said sharply. He signaled the driver, and the convoy sped off toward the coastal cliffs of Cap Ferrat.

Twenty minutes later, the heavy iron gates of Villa De la Rose appeared through the Mediterranean pines. The grand estate sat perched on the edge of a sheer cliff overlooking the turquoise ocean below—ironically, the exact same landscape where Julian had lost his life ten years prior.

Alessandro’s security team made quick work of the estate's perimeter security. Within ninety seconds, the front doors were breached without a single shot being fired.

Evelyn and Alessandro walked into the soaring foyer of the villa. The floor was cluttered with empty luggage, packing crates, and bubble wrap.

In the center of the living room, Sloane was frantically stuffing priceless Renaissance paintings into custom travel cases, her hair disheveled, her expensive makeup smeared with sweat and panic. Meredith stood beside her, shouting into a satellite phone in a blind panic.

"I don't care how much it costs, extract us now!" Meredith screamed into the phone, before turning around and freezing dead in her tracks.

The phone slipped from Meredith's hand, hitting the marble floor with a loud clatter.

Sloane spun around, holding a small silver frame, her eyes going wide with pure terror as she saw Evelyn and Alessandro standing in the doorway flanked by four armed security operators.

"You..." Sloane whispered, her voice choking. "How... how did you find us?!"

"You used Mother’s offshore credit card to pay for the jet fuel in New York, Sloane," Evelyn said, stepping forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. "Did you really think I wouldn't track the account I set up for her five years ago?"

"Evelyn, darling!" Meredith instantly shifted tactics, forcing a grotesque, trembling smile onto her face as she rushed toward her eldest daughter with open arms. "Thank God you're safe! We were so worried about you! Alessandro forced you to leave, didn't he? He kidnapped you! Tell the police he hijacked you!"

Evelyn didn't move. As Meredith reached her, Evelyn casually raised her right hand and delivered a sharp, echoing slap directly across her mother's face.

CRACK!

Meredith stumbled back, clutching her reddened cheek, her eyes wide with total shock. "Evelyn!"

"Don't ever touch me again, Mother," Evelyn said, her voice icy and dead silent. "And don't ever call me 'darling'."

Sloane dropped the painting she was holding, her terror morphing into ugly rage. "You think you're powerful now because you're sleeping with a Valdieri?! You're nothing! You were always the outcast! Dad hated you! We all hated you!"

"I know," Evelyn replied calmly. "Which is why it gives me immense pleasure to tell you that Father was arrested by federal agents at JFK Airport forty-five minutes ago."

Sloane’s face drained of all color. "What... what did you say?"

"The Zurich authorities processed the decryption key," Alessandro chimed in, stepping up beside Evelyn. "Every bank account, shell company, and trust fund connected to the Hartwell name has been permanently seized by international law enforcement. You have zero dollars, Sloane. Zero."

"No... no, no, NO!" Sloane shrieked, tearing at her hair, dropping to her knees amid the packing crates. "That’s my money! That’s MY money!"

"It was never your money," Evelyn said, walking over to stand directly over her hysterical sister. "It was stolen. Just like you stole Julian's life."

At the mention of Julian's name, Meredith gasped, taking a quick step backward toward the balcony doors.

"We know about the Amalfi footage, Sloane," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register that made even the security guards shiver. "We have the video of you driving the car. We have the forensic logs showing how Leonard forged the police report."

Sloane stopped screaming. She looked up slowly, her face contorted in a horrifying mix of fear and madness. "Julian was an idiot... he tried to take the wheel from me... it was an accident!"

"An accident you let him take the blame for in death," Evelyn said softly. "An accident that destroyed another family."

Suddenly, Meredith bolted toward the open glass doors of the balcony.

"She’s running!" an operator yelled.

"Let her go," Alessandro commanded smoothly. "Look where she’s running to."

Meredith burst through the balcony doors onto the stone terrace overlooking the hundred-foot cliff drop into the Mediterranean Sea below. But she didn't escape.

Waiting on the terrace, standing in the bright sunlight, were four French National Police officers accompanied by the Interpol Senior Director for Southern Europe.

Meredith stopped dead, her back against the wrought-iron railing, surrounded.

"Meredith Hartwell," the Interpol director announced in heavy French-accented English, holding up an official international arrest warrant. "You and your daughter Sloane Hartwell are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice, international money laundering, and grand larceny. Step away from the railing."

Sloane began to sob hysterically inside the living room as two female Interpol officers stepped inside and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her delicate wrists.

Evelyn watched as her sister was dragged away, weeping and screaming curses at the top of her lungs. She watched as her mother was led past her in cuffs, Meredith's head bowed low, completely broken, her polished facade shattered forever.

As the police cars drove away down the winding mountain road, sirens blaring through the quiet coastal morning, a heavy silence settled over the villa.

Evelyn walked out onto the balcony, leaning against the cold stone railing, staring out at the sparkling blue waters of the sea where her brother had died ten years ago.

Alessandro walked up behind her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It's over, Evelyn. They will spend the rest of their lives in prison."

Evelyn closed her eyes, letting the warm ocean breeze hit her face. "It doesn't bring Julian back."

"No," Alessandro whispered softly, pulling her back against his chest, wrapping his arms around her securely. "It doesn't. But it gives him back his name. And it gives you your freedom."

Evelyn turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark eyes. For the first time since they met in that chaotic kitchen, she saw genuine warmth behind his intense gaze.

"What now, Lord Valdieri?" Evelyn asked, a tiny, genuine smile playing on her lips. "Our fake diplomatic marriage worked. The Hartwells are destroyed. You have your revenge. Do we file for annulment?"

May you like

Alessandro looked down at her, his hands coming up to gently frame her face, his thumbs stroking her cheekbones.

"Annulment?" Alessandro murmured, his face slowly descending toward hers until their lips were mere millimeters apart. "Who said anything about this being fake, Mrs. Valdieri?"
