Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Hardwood

The heavy oak front door slammed against the wall, the sound echoing like a gunshot through the foyer.

Daniel dropped his leather travel bag. His eyes widened, fixed on the horrifying tableau before him: his sister, Vanessa, her knuckles white as she twisted my hair around her fist, and me, eight months pregnant, gasping in a growing pool of my own amniotic fluid and blood.

For a split second, time froze. Then, Vanessa let go of my hair as if she had been burned. She stumbled backward, instantly shifting her face from a mask of murderous rage to one of sheer, manufactured terror.

"Daniel! Oh my god, thank god you're here!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching her chest. "She went crazy! I just came over to check on her, and she lunged at me! I had to defend myself!"

I couldn't speak. The pain radiating from my abdomen was blinding, a tearing sensation that made the edges of my vision go black. I reached a trembling hand toward my husband.

Daniel didn't look at Vanessa. He didn't say a word. He crossed the room in two massive strides, dropped to his knees, and pulled my head into his lap. His hands were shaking as he pulled out his phone and dialed 911.

"My wife is pregnant. Her water broke. There's... there's a lot of blood. Send an ambulance. Now."

"Daniel, you have to believe me!" Vanessa cried, stepping over the shattered remains of the hallway camera she had just crushed beneath her designer heel. "She’s unstable! She attacked me!"

"Get out," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a deadly, quiet register that I had never heard before.

"Daniel—"

"I said get out of my house!" he roared, the sound vibrating through my chest.

Vanessa scrambled backward, grabbing her purse and fleeing out the front door. As the sirens began to wail in the distance, another agonizing contraction ripped through me. I gripped Daniel's shirt, pulling him down.

"The... the babies..." I choked out, tasting copper.

"They're going to be okay. I've got you," he whispered, kissing my forehead as tears streamed down his face.

The paramedics rushed in, and everything dissolved into a chaotic blur of flashing red lights, shouting voices, and the terrifying cold of the stretcher. As the ambulance doors slammed shut, I lost consciousness, not knowing if my children were dead or alive.

🔥 HOOK: I woke up to the steady beep of a heart monitor, but the room was deathly silent. My hands immediately flew to my stomach. It was flat. And Daniel was sitting in the corner, staring at a laptop screen with a look of pure, unadulterated horror.
