Chapter 5 - Checkmate in Sirens
"What did you just do?" Daniel stared at me, his eyes wide.
"I burned your mother's empire to the ground," I said, typing furiously on my phone to monitor the data packet transfers. "The 'failsafe' she threatened you with? It’s useless. My honeypot script bypassed her admin access and locked down the entire corporate server. She can't delete anything, and she can't upload her forged documents."
Daniel looked stunned, running a hand through his hair. "You... you recorded her? On the phone?"
"I was on an open line with Detective Miller at the precinct," I said. "The one who took Vanessa's bogus assault claim this morning. He heard everything. The embezzlement, the blackmail, the extortion."
Across the city, at the opulent family estate, Eleanor and Vanessa were likely popping champagne, believing they had won. They had no idea that a digital guillotine had just dropped on their heads.
Thirty minutes later, the hospital room television, which was muted on a local news station, suddenly flashed a breaking news banner.
Daniel grabbed the remote and turned up the volume.
"...breaking news out of the affluent West End district, where federal agents and local SWAT teams have just raided the estate of the prominent Sterling family. Eyewitnesses report seeing Eleanor Sterling and her daughter, Vanessa Sterling, being escorted from the premises in handcuffs..."
The screen showed helicopters circling the mansion. Vanessa was screaming at the cameras, her mascara running down her face, while Eleanor looked pale, furious, and utterly defeated as an FBI agent pushed her into the back of an armored SUV.
Daniel stared at the screen, a mix of grief and profound relief washing over his face. His family was destroyed, but the nightmare was over. The people who had tried to kill his children and ruin his life were finally paying the price.
He walked over to my bed and kissed me, a deep, lingering kiss. "You saved us," he whispered. "You saved me, you saved the twins. I love you so much."

🔥 HOOK: Two days later, the twins were stabilized. The doctors said they were going to make a full recovery. Vanessa and Eleanor were denied bail, facing 20 years in federal prison for extortion, embezzlement, and attempted murder. Everything was perfect. Until Daniel left the hospital room to get coffee, and his unlocked phone buzzed on the nightstand with a text from an unsaved number.
