Chapter 4 - A Race Against the SyndicateI slammed the laptop shut, grabbed my backpack, and yelled for Jerry.

Outside the rain-slicked glass of the diner, two black SUVs pulled up to the curb, headlights blinding. Armed men poured out into the rain.

"Out the back! Go!" I screamed to the diner staff as chaos erupted.

Jerry leaped over the counter, leading the way toward the kitchen exit. Bullets shattered the front glass windows of the diner, sending glass raining down onto plastic booths. We kicked open the rear kitchen door and sprinted into the labyrinthine industrial district behind the restaurant.

We hid inside an abandoned train car as police sirens wailed in the distance. Drenched, exhausted, and running on pure adrenaline, I examined the ledger once more under the faint glow of my smartphone light.

Beside my father's signature in the back was a set of geographic coordinates and a timestamp set for 03:00 AM TODAY.

The coordinates pointed to a remote, abandoned grain silo near the river docks—the old manufacturing warehouse where my father's original woodworking business operated before he disappeared.

"He knew they would come for the couch," I muttered to Jerry. "The couch was bait to get me to move."

If my father knew Jerry would find the ledger, then the silo wasn't just a hiding place—it was an rendezvous point.
