Chapter 7 - Unearthing the TruthThe shadow descended the iron stairs with mechanical efficiency. As the figure stepped into the light, my heart stopped.

Grey hair, scarred face, worn tactical gear—it was my father.

"Dad?" I choked out.

"Stand down, Marcus," my father said, his voice like grinding stones. "Ten years I waited in the shadows for you to expose every high-level corrupt official on that network. You thought you bought my silence when you tried to execute me. You forgot who built this foundation."

Marcus raised his weapon toward my father, but Jerry sprang forward like a dark bullet, clamping his jaws onto Marcus's forearm. The gun clattered to the concrete floor. Marcus screamed in pain as I tackled him to the ground, securing him with heavy plastic zip-ties from my pack.

My father walked over, placing a heavy, trembling hand on my shoulder. "You did well, son. And good boy, Jerry."

"You're alive..." I murmured, tears welling in my eyes. "All these years... you let me believe you were dead!"

"I had to," my father said softly. "The syndicate had eyes everywhere—including the police and judiciary. The only way to keep you safe was to vanish until I had total proof of their entire syndicate chain. But I needed a neutral party to extract the drive without triggering their automated deletion system. Someone they wouldn't suspect until it was too late."

"The couch," I said, realizing the sheer genius and madness of the plan.

"The couch was custom-built by me 15 years ago," my father smiled faintly. "It was sold to a syndicate safehouse. Last week, I stole it back, loaded the drive, sent it to the refurbisher, and tipped you off through an anonymous interior design ad."
