Chapter 12 - The Secret Annex

Evelyn Vance didn't wait for an invitation; she stepped smoothly onto the porch and rested her briefcase on the old cedar bench.

“You’re a hard man to find, Mr. Reed,” Evelyn noted, studying me with sharp, analytical eyes that had spent decades parsing corporate double-talk. “Twenty-five years ago, an auditor with your exact personnel classification vanished from the federal register just as a major interstate embezzlement ring collapsed. Twenty years later, you surface on a dead-end farm in Hartwell County, only for the most powerful real estate conglomerate in the region to implode within six hours of a midnight home visit.”

I kept working the leather rag over the brass buckle, my movements slow and rhythmic.

“People move to the country for peace and quiet, Ms. Vance,” I replied evenly. “Sometimes people find it. Sometimes they have to clear out the brush to keep it.”

“Brush is one thing,” Evelyn said, unlatching her briefcase and pulling out a heavy, yellowed file folder stamped with crimson federal seals. “A complete structural dismantling of an entire municipal development cartel, backed by encrypted forensic audits and Swiss banking records that took the DOJ ten years to unsuccessfully trace? That’s not clearing brush. That’s an execution.”

She slid a single sheet of paper across the bench toward me. It was a copy of the emergency asset transfer agreement Daniel and Warren had signed under the glow of the midnight chandelier—complete with notarized signatures, bank routing numbers, and the two-million-dollar disbursement layout.

“The federal bankruptcy court wants to claw back the settlement funds,” Evelyn continued, leaning in slightly. “They claim the transfer was executed under economic duress, coercion, and unlawful restraint. They want every penny returned to the estate liquidation pool.”

Claire walked up from the barn, her boots crunching sharply on the gravel. She heard the last sentence and stepped onto the porch, her eyes flashing with cold fire.

“Coercion?” Claire’s voice cut through the afternoon heat like a razor. “My husband beat me bloody, threw me out in the freezing dark, and told me nobody would believe me because my father was a nobody. The only thing that was restrained that night was my right to live in peace.”

Evelyn didn't flinch. She looked from Claire to me, her expression shifting from cold professional suspicion to a strange, grudging respect.
