The sun dipped slowly below the jagged silhouette of the western ridge, painting the sky in deep shades of violet, amber, and burning orange.

Hartwell County slept secure beneath the mountain shadows, its people working their land, raising their children, and walking down streets no longer owned by men who thought power gave them the right to break things.
