Chapter 14 - The Purchase of the Ridge

The paperwork took three days to finalize.

On a bright Friday morning, Claire and I drove into town to the county recorder's office. The old municipal building smelled of floor wax and stale coffee, a far cry from the opulent, marble-pillared office where Warren Voss used to dictate terms to local business owners.

The clerk behind the counter—a nervous middle-aged woman who remembered the days when crossing the Voss family meant losing your job—stared wide-eyed at the transfer documents.

“Voss Hill?” she whispered, looking up from the papers to peer over her glasses at me. “You’re buying the Voss estate, Mr. Reed?”

“Leasing the conservation rights through the cooperative,” I corrected softly, sliding my identification card across the scratched laminate counter. “Farming and watershed protection. Nothing fancy.”

She stamped the forms with a heavy, rhythmic thud that echoed through the quiet office. Three crisp thuds, and forty years of feudal dominance by a corrupt real estate dynasty evaporated into administrative history.

When we stepped back out onto the courthouse steps, the midday sun was high and warm. Across the square, the old brick building that once housed Voss Development Corp now bore a bare, unpainted storefront with a simple sign in the window: Available for Lease.

“Do you realize what this means, Daddy?” Claire asked, shielding her eyes against the glare as we walked toward the truck.

“It means the weeds are going to take over that big glass mansion on the hill,” I said, opening the passenger door for her. “And we’ve got three hundred acres of prime soil to clear for the autumn planting.”

Claire laughed, a rich, grounded sound that carried over the downtown traffic. She climbed into the truck, and as I walked around to the driver's side, I caught a glimpse of our reflection in the polished chrome mirror—two ordinary people from the south road who had simply refused to break when the world tried to crush them underfoot.
