Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of SinsI slammed the phone onto the metal table. “Officer! Look at this!”

Daniels snatched the phone, his face hardening as he read the text and looked at the photo. He immediately stood up and banged on the two-way mirror. “Lock down the perimeter! We’ve got a photographer outside or in the hallway!”
Within seconds, the station erupted into chaos. Officers scrambled out the door, sidearms drawn, while Daniels dragged me deeper into the secured back office.
“Who owes what?” Daniels demanded, staring into my eyes. “Who is Ryan involved with?”
“I don’t know!” I cried, my voice echoing in the small room. “Ryan was an accountant! He worked for a firm downtown! He and Madison always talked about their country club memberships, their new cars, their grand house in the suburbs! They were rich!”
“Or they wanted everyone to think they were,” a female voice interjected.
A sharp-looking detective in a dark trench coat walked into the room, tossing a heavy binder onto the table. “I’m Detective Vance, Financial Crimes unit. We’ve been building a confidential case on your brother for six months, Ms. Carter. It seems Ryan wasn't just managing money for his firm. He was operating a massive ponzi scheme, laundering funds for a local organized crime syndicate known as the Red Line Syndicate.”
My heart stopped. “Organized crime?”
“Ryan accumulated over $4 million in debt to some very dangerous people,” Vance explained coldly. “And over the last three weeks, he withdrew every single cent from his family’s savings, liquidated his children’s college funds, and maxed out multiple fraudulent credit cards opened under your name.”
I felt the air leave my lungs. “Under my name?”
“Five credit cards,” Vance read from her file. “A second mortgage on your townhouse. A $200,000 personal loan. He’s been stealing your identity for over two years, Olivia. You were his human shield.”
The horror of the past eight years washed over me like a tidal wave. All those times Ryan asked for my social security number for ‘family insurance policies’ or ‘tax exemptions for taking care of his kids.’ All those Sunday dinners where they mocked my modest apartment and humble lifestyle. They weren't just treating me like a servant—they were setting me up to take the fall for a multi-million-dollar criminal debt!
“And Madison?” I whispered, tears of rage brimming in my eyes. “Did she know?”
“Madison was the one who forged your signature on the legal custody papers yesterday,” Vance said without emotion. “We pulled CCTV footage from a local notary public from yesterday afternoon—right after your argument at Sunday dinner. She walked in posing as you, using your stolen ID.”
They didn't just abandon their kids because they wanted a fresh start. They abandoned their children to save their own skins, handing four helpless kids and a mountain of deadly debt to me on a silver platter.
Suddenly, the door to the holding room snapped open. A social worker walked out holding three-year-old Chloe. Maya and Leo followed behind, their eyes red and swollen from crying.
When eight-year-old Leo saw me, he broke away from the social worker and sprinted toward me, throwing his arms around my waist.
“Auntie Olivia!” he sobbed into my shirt. “Mommy and Daddy said you were coming to get us last night! They said you were going to play a game where we stay quiet in the house until you came!”
I wrapped my arms around my nephew, my blood boiling with a fury I had never felt in my life. Ryan and Madison had used these innocent kids as bait.

“Where are Mom and Dad?” I whispered to Leo, kneeling down to his eye level. “Did they say where they were going?”
Leo sniffled, reaching into his pocket. “Daddy gave me a note. He said to give it only to you... when the police weren't looking.”
