Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedI stared at the passports in absolute horror.

The names were completely fake, but the photos were undeniably Ryan and Madison. However, the children’s photos in the fake family passports weren't my nieces and nephews—they were two completely random, unknown kids!

I opened the blue ledger book. Page after page contained meticulous handwriting—Madison’s handwriting.

It wasn't Ryan who had orchestrated the embezzlement. It was Madison.

Madison had been laundering money through Ryan’s firm for four years, using Ryan’s charm and status to cover her tracks. But it went even deeper: Madison hadn't just stolen $4 million from the Syndicate—she had set up a double-cross.

According to the notes written in the ledger, Madison and Ryan had bought illegal identities in Mexico, paid off a human trafficking ring to secure fake children to blend in at the border, and were planning to framing me and my parents for the entire operation.

The $4 million debt to the Syndicate? It was fake.

Madison and Ryan had staged the entire debt threat to justify vanishing without a trace, leaving their real children behind so they wouldn't slow them down while fleeing the country!

“Fascinating read, isn't it?” a soft, terrifying voice echoed from the barn entrance.

I spun around, slamming the briefcase shut.

Standing in the sunlight filtering through the barn doors was Madison, holding a sleek black handgun pointed directly at my chest.

Behind her stood my brother Ryan, looking thin, frantic, and terrified.

“Madison!” I gasped, slowly standing up, keeping the briefcase behind my legs. “You... you were never in debt!”

“Of course we weren't in debt, you stupid bitch,” Madison sneered, stepping closer, her gun trained on my heart. “Do you really think Ryan and I were going to spend the rest of our lives paying off mortgages and raising four screaming children in the suburbs?”

I looked at my brother. “Ryan... you abandoned your own kids! You left three-year-old twins in an unlocked house!”

Ryan flinched, looking away in shame. “Olivia... we couldn't take four kids across the border! It was too risky! We needed the police to focus on a child abandonment investigation to buy us time to clear the border!”

“You used your own children as a smoke screen?” I screamed, my voice echoing off the wooden rafters of the barn. “You framed me! You stole my identity! You ruined my life!”

“Your life was already empty, Olivia!” Madison yelled back, her eyes wild with greed. “You had nothing! No husband, no kids, no grand career! We gave you a family! You wanted to play the self-sacrificing martyr at Sunday dinner? Congratulations! Now you get to raise four kids while taking the fall for $4 million in white-collar fraud!”

“And what about Mom and Dad?” I asked, trying to buy time as my hand slowly slid into my coat pocket toward my phone. “They covered for you!”

“Mom and Dad are idiots,” Madison laughed coldly. “They thought they were helping Ryan escape loan sharks. They have no idea we stole their life savings from their private trust yesterday morning too.”

Ryan stepped forward nervously. “Madison, just take the briefcase with the cash and the drives. We don't need to shoot her.”

“Yes, we do, Ryan!” Madison snapped, her weapon unwavering. “She knows too much. If she lives, the police track us down. If she dies here, we burn the barn, the police think it’s the Syndicate’s doing, and we fly out of the local airfield in thirty minutes.”

She pulled back the hammer of the gun.

“Say goodbye, sister-in-law.”
