Chapter 4 - The Matriarch’s DeceptionI stared at the glowing screen for three long rings before swiping to answer. I put the call on speaker, resting my hand on the bathroom counter to steady myself.

“Olivia!” my mother’s frantic voice wailed through the speaker. “Oh, thank God you answered! Where are you? Where are the children?”
Her voice was full of weeping and hysteria, but now, with Ryan’s note sitting right in front of me, every tear sounded fake, rehearsed, and calculated.
“They’re with me, Mom,” I said, keeping my tone dead pan. “They were abandoned in an empty house at 6:00 a.m.”
“Oh, it’s a tragedy! A complete nightmare!” Mom sobbed. “Ryan called us late last night—he said he and Madison had to leave the country immediately for a sudden business opportunity in Europe! He said you had agreed to look after the children!”
“Stop lying, Mom.”
The weeping stopped instantly. A thick, suffocating silence gripped the line.
“What did you say?” Mom’s tone shifted from sobbing victim to cold, razor-sharp authority in less than a second.
“I know about the $4 million,” I said, leaning closer to the phone. “I know about Ryan’s debt to the Red Line Syndicate. I know about the fraudulent loans in my name. And I know you and Dad knew about all of it before Sunday dinner.”
For five seconds, the only sound was the faint breathing of my mother on the other end of the line.
When she finally spoke, her voice contained no love, no regret, and no maternal warmness. It was pure, unfiltered ice.
“You’ve always been selfish, Olivia,” she said quietly. “From the moment Ryan was born, you resented him. He had potential. He had a future. He built a real family! What do you have? A lonely little apartment and a mid-level job. You are nobody.”
The words cut deep, but the pain was instantly replaced by a raging fire in my chest.
“He threw his children to the wolves to save his own skin!” I yelled in a low whisper so as not to wake the children. “He left a three-year-old locked in a house with the front door open!”
“He did what he had to do to survive!” Mom hissed back. “Ryan and Madison are in international waters right now. They are safe. The Syndicate was going to kill him, Olivia! As a mother, I will always protect my son!”
“And what about me? What about your four grandchildren?”
“You are strong, Olivia. You always manage,” Mom said coldly. “Give the police what they want, take out another loan to satisfy Ryan’s debts, and raise those children. It’s your duty as a Carter. If you try to track Ryan down, or if you tell the police where he transferred his off-shore accounts, I will personally go to the police and swear under oath that you were the mastermind behind Ryan’s financial fraud.”
I let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. “You would frame your own daughter?”
“I will save my son,” she replied without an ounce of hesitation. “Now, bring the kids to my house tomorrow morning. There are people coming to inspect Ryan’s property, and we need to present a united family front.”
“Go to hell, Mom.”
I slammed the end-call button and stood in the dark bathroom, my heart hammering against my ribs.
My mother wasn't trying to help me. She was trying to lure me back into her orbit so she could control the damage and shield Ryan. But she didn't know about the note in my pocket. She didn't know that Ryan had betrayed her too by giving me the key to his secret steel box.
I looked at the clock: 2:15 a.m.

If I wanted to save those kids and set myself free from this nightmare, I couldn't rely on the police, and I certainly couldn't trust my family.
I had to go to my parents’ house tonight—before sunrise—and steal that key.
