Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Studio

The fragile peace we had built in the quiet of the studio was shattered on a cold Thursday night in late October.
We were working on the final notes of his fragrance—a complex blend of the Sicilian orange blossom, aged cedar, black pepper, and a very faint, smoky trace of vetiver that gave the scent a dangerous, mysterious edge.
Suddenly, the smell of ozone in the air changed.
It wasn't the clean smell of an approaching storm. It was the sharp, synthetic smell of burning plastic and gasoline.
"Alessandro," I said, sniffing the air sharply. "Something is burning."
In an instant, Alessandro was on his feet. I heard the sharp, metallic slide of his pistol being drawn from his holster.
"Stay down, Viola!" he commanded, his voice dropping into that terrifying, low register I hadn't heard since the corridor at the charity ball.
A sudden, deafening CRASH echoed from the front of the shop. The sound of shattering glass was immediately followed by the roar of flames. A Molotov cocktail had been thrown through the display window.
"Fire!" I screamed, the thick, acrid smoke of burning flowers and gasoline instantly filling my lungs, making me cough violently.
"Marco!" Alessandro shouted into his radio. "We have a breach at the studio! Get the cars around the back now!"
He grabbed my waist, lifting me effortlessly off my feet as the smoke began to fill the room, blotting out my internal map of the studio. I couldn't orient myself; the heat was coming from everywhere, the roaring of the flames drowning out the sound of the exit door.
"Hold on to me," Alessandro growled near my ear, his body shielding mine as he kicked open the heavy wooden door leading to the back alley.
As we stepped into the cold night air, the sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the end of the alley.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
"Down!" Alessandro yelled, throwing his body over mine as we hit the wet asphalt.
I heard the sharp ping of bullets ricocheting off the brick walls of the alley, followed by the deep, booming return fire from Alessandro's pistol. He fired three times, each shot incredibly loud, followed by a heavy thud and a scream of pain from the darkness.
"Alessandro!" a voice yelled from the street. It was Marco. "We have the SUV! Get her in!"
Alessandro lifted me up, his large hand supporting my head as he shoved me into the back seat of a large, armored vehicle. He climbed in behind me, slamming the heavy door shut just as another volley of bullets struck the reinforced glass with loud, dull thuds.

"Go!" Alessandro roared to the driver.
The vehicle lunged forward, the tires screeching against the wet pavement as we sped away from the burning remnants of my life.
