Chapter 9 - The Sweet Scent of Victory

The war was over before it could truly begin.

With the Caruso family exiled and their northern docks absorbed into the Moretti Syndicate, the city of Philadelphia entered a new era of unprecedented peace. The other families, seeing the absolute, ruthless efficiency with which Alessandro had protected his house, chose to cooperate rather than compete.

Three months after the meeting at the cathedral, my new studio opened on the corner of Walnut Street.

It was twice the size of my old shop, built with heavy brick walls, reinforced security glass, and a private garden in the back where fresh roses, lavender, and mint grew in abundance under the watchful eyes of two discreet, polite security guards.

"It is perfect, Viola," Bianca said, walking through the spacious display room, her arms full of fresh eucalyptus. "Honestly, I think having your old shop burned down was the best career move you ever made."

"Bianca!" I laughed, swatting at her with a dry lavender bundle.

"I'm serious!" she giggled, running into the back room. "The new layout is gorgeous. And the fragrance you made... the 'Moretti' blend? It's already sold out of its first run."

I smiled, reaching down to touch the heavy silver stopper of the large display vial on the counter. The scent inside was the perfect realization of our journey: the sweet, resilient Sicilian orange blossom, the deep, grounding cedar, and that sharp, smoky trace of vetiver that kept us safe in the dark.

The bell above the door didn't ring, but the air in the shop changed.

The fresh eucalyptus and lavender were pushed aside by the warm, familiar scent of rain, wool, and that beautiful, private trace of orange blossom that belonged only to him.

"You're late," I said, not turning around as I polished the glass bottle.

"The union dispute at the port took longer than expected," Alessandro said, his footsteps slow and deliberate as he walked behind the counter. He wrapped his large, warm arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck. "But I hear my wife has already sold out of her best work."

"Only because the inspiration was so stubborn," I teased, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck.

Alessandro let out that low, rich chuckle that I loved so much, his lips finding mine in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet honey and the promise of a lifetime.

"I am not stubborn, Viola," he murmured against my lips. "I am just highly selective."
