Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of the Wolf

I woke up to the smell of woodsmoke, old leather, and wool.

The air was warm and still. I was lying on a massive, soft bed wrapped in thick, heavy blankets that smelled faintly of lavender and cedar.

"You're safe, Viola."

Alessandro was sitting in a chair beside the bed. I could hear the crackle of a real fireplace nearby, the warmth of the flames washing over my face.

"My shop," I whispered, my throat raw and painful from the smoke. "My mother's formulas... my oils..."

"The fire was put out," Alessandro said, his voice unusually gentle as he leaned forward, pressing a warm cup of herbal tea with honey into my hands. "Most of your studio was saved, but the front of the building is gone. It was a targeted attack by the Caruso family. They knew I was visiting you."

"They targeted me because of you?" I asked, a sudden, bitter anger flaring in my chest. "I have nothing to do with your war, Alessandro! I am just a perfumer!"

"I know," he said, and I heard him stand up, his footsteps silent as he walked to the edge of the bed. He sat beside me, the mattress dipping under his weight. "And for that, I am sorry. I thought I could keep my world away from yours. I was wrong."

He reached out, his hand gently capturing mine. His fingers were trembling slightly—a detail that shocked me more than the gunfire in the alley. The most ruthless man in Philadelphia was afraid.

"They did not attack you because of my shipping lanes, Viola," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "They attacked you because they realized you are my weakness. They saw how I looked at you at the charity ball. They saw how I protected you from Julian Vance. They know that if they hurt you, they hurt me."

"And are you?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the crackle of the fire. "Are you weak because of me?"

May you like

Alessandro leaned down, his warm lips brushing against my forehead, then my cheek, before stopping just millimeters from my mouth.

"I am not weak, Viola," he murmured, his breath warm against my skin. "But for the first time in my life, I have something I cannot afford to lose."
