Chapter 10 - The Reign of the King and Queen

Enzo panicked, raising his shotgun to fire.
Luciano moved like a shadow. He closed the distance in a single, explosive stride, his blade flashing in the dim light of the library.
With a swift, brutal slash, Luciano cut the straps of Enzo's leather brace, before driving his blade straight through Enzo’s throat, pinning him to the wooden bookshelves behind him.
Enzo gasped, his eyes wide with shock and terror as his blood began to pool on the clean white carpet. He slid down the wall, lifeless.
Luciano didn't look at the body. He threw the blood-stained blade aside and rushed toward the desk, pulling me out from my hiding place and wrapping me in his massive arms.
"Are you hurt, Valyria?" he gasped, his hands shaking as he cupped my face, checking every inch of my skin for injuries. "Did he touch you?"
"I'm fine, Luciano," I said, my tears finally escaping as I held onto his wet coat. "I'm fine. You came back."
"I will always come back for you, Valyria," he whispered, his forehead resting against mine as he let out a long, shaky breath of relief. "You are my home now. And nothing in this world will ever take you from me."
Two years later, the Messina empire had completely absorbed the Caruso docks, creating a single, unbreakable syndicate that ruled the entire Eastern Seaboard.
There were no more wars. There were no more threats. The name Messina was spoken only with profound respect and absolute fear.
I stood on the balcony of the 47th floor of our new downtown headquarters, looking out over the rain-soaked city of Philadelphia. I wore a simple, elegant emerald gown, my grandmother's silver pin held in my hair, and the stunning gray diamond ring on my left hand reflecting the early morning light.
Luciano walked out onto the balcony behind me, his large arms wrapping around my waist, pulling my back flush against his solid chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, his warm breath tickling my ear.
"The cargo from Naples has cleared the docks, my queen," he murmured, his hand coming down to rest over mine. "And your father has officially retired to his house in the country. The board is ours."
I turned in his arms, looking up into his beautiful gray eyes—eyes that were no longer cold or haunted, but filled with a deep, endless love that had saved my soul.
"Then let's rule it together, Luciano," I said, leaning up to press a soft, deep kiss against his lips. "After all, we paid the price for this peace."

Luciano smiled, his arms tightening around me as the rain began to fall over the city below—a city that finally knew who its king and queen were.
